Crowd work has ruined standup comedy

Every clip I see on Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok is just some person doing an awful job at crowd work.
There are few comedians who are actually good at and incorporate it well in their routines, ie Sam Morril or Stavros Halkias, but for the most part it’s just bad.
What happened to actually writing and telling funny jokes?

Matt Rife is a pretty good example of this. His act is almost entirely 100% crowd work and its pretty godawful. Really not sure how that guy got famous

People got offended and many comedians are afraid of being cancelled

It is very difficult for a comedian to come up with an original 30-1 hr set. If they showed their actual jokes on these social media clips there is no incentive for folks to attend the shows.

The bad one probably get ChatGPT to write their jokes.

A lot of crowd work is fantastic. You mentioned Morril and Halkias, but lesser names like Dan Soder and Big Jay Oakerson have fantastic stand-alone crowd work sets out there.
And I know I'll get shite on for this, but people who say Matt Rife is bad at crowd work have not seen truly awful crowd work

I guess I'm not a purist because I found Rife to be amusing enough
granted I've watched like 5 minutes of clips total

I don’t know why but I want to blame Dane Cook.

Political Correctness and Totalitarian Progressivism ruined comedy.

This
Unless it was a clip from an already released special, you will not see much else from legit comedians on social media as they refine their bits, or at least that's what I've learned from listening to Rogan.

I don't know if it ruined it, but in the era of men trying to get pregnant it's pretty insane that so much material is being left off to the side

Huh? Dane cook actually had material and didn't rely on the crowd.

I know it’s “the thing” nowadays to hate him, but he’s actually pretty good at crowd work. Better than most of the trash doing it these days.
His actual standup is terrible…and for that, I wonder how he gets specials. I know his Netflix one was met with similar reviews.

I had to google him.
The first five minutes so far are pretty good.
I entered this thread not fully understanding the meaning of crowd work. If Matt Rife is an example I have no issue with it.

I agree. He does well engaging

Yeah it just sucked. Why he had one of the shortest runs as one of the top comics. Once people realized screaming everything isn't funny he was toast

Most comedians vote for Biden or Bernie and say whatever they want to

I've seen several in interviews say a lot of people come into their show and immediately expect them to do crowd work when they've spent years creating their 1/2-1 hour sets. The crowd work is just 5-10 minutes at the end of the show. Yes, it's all they show on social media, but that's because they've spent years on that set. Why give it away just so you can hear it again?!
