I know there's a big green grasshopper thing that most people call katydids, but my grandma never referred to cidadas as cicadas. Just katydids. She was a poor from Sicily Island, though.

one of the morons on The View, Sunny Hostin, called cicadas, ci-kah-das and the others had to tell her it's ci-KAY-das. Maybe she was thinking about enchilADAs or something.

We called cicadas locust and cranefly mosquito hawks. Being part indian and those 2 things were biggest lies from my youth.

Katydids/locust/cicadas are all different.

It’s like eating roast and calling it steak. Sure it’s beef but it’s not a steak

They are two different things. When I first moved to NW Arkansas the katydids were horribly noisy. They come out for three months each summer. I have never seen them before.

Never had anyone in the family call 'em katydids, but Dad's side of the family from western Kentucky called 'em locusts and Mom's side of the family from south western West Virginia called 'em jar flies.

I think the need to call them "locusts" is a side effect of being in the Bible Belt.

No, but every idiot on the internet or living in south Louisiana calls them locusts.

Like the things that live in Africa and the Middle East.
