Anybody else's grandma call cicadas "katydids"?
“Katydids sing like a symphony…”

That's another species of katydid. There are a bunch of them.

In GA growing up, this is also what we called Katydid.
Catch them by the porch light, put in jar, catch bream in the creek the next morning.
Like a walking leaf grasshopper that really sucked at evasion tactics, the camo didn't work on vinyl siding.

They are two different things. When I first moved to NW Arkansas the katydids were horribly noisy. They come out for three months each summer. I have never seen them before.

Never had anyone in the family call 'em katydids, but Dad's side of the family from western Kentucky called 'em locusts and Mom's side of the family from south western West Virginia called 'em jar flies.

This is a katydid... That's a grass hopper...

I think the need to call them "locusts" is a side effect of being in the Bible Belt.

Cicadas on the menu at a New Orleans Cafe. Belly up.

No, but every idiot on the internet or living in south Louisiana calls them locusts.
Like the things that live in Africa and the Middle East.

Hell, my country arse has called them katydids all of my 67 years and will continue to call them katydids, or kadydids.

She was a poor from Sicily Island, though.
Dad reported to the draft in Sicily Island where he boarded a bus to WA for basic training.
He was from Mangham and I would rarely hear him refer to a katydid . We used to catch cicadas everywhere we lived (if for no other reason than to keep them off cars/house). Grandad from TX never referred to katydid’s either and he was orphaned by age 14 and never graduated the 6th grade.
