Hell the grass here is two foot tall and I don’t even have a back patio. Bought a little Webber Grill to cook.
$3500 seems steep for that but don't knock the Weber

shite I’d like to know what it takes to be in the 1% now vs 5 years ago. Seems like it would have went up a bunch. Middle class and upper middle class getting fricked.
frick there’s about to be no middle class. Just poor, upper middle and rich.

It’s costing me easily $1000 more to $1500 more per month to not be locked into a rental while my house is on the market.
Didn’t want the right house to show up and be in a rental for a year. I’m moving for the 3rd time since December 4th at the end of the month to a 1800 sqft month to month for $3500 a month.
Could probably get something closer to 2k to 2500 if we signed a year lease but I’m going to probably buy or build within the next year.

4 or 5 years ago I’d say $55k was enough to live comfortably by yourself. Today…at least $65…

Have you considered a mail order bride? The way I understand it works is you select which woman you want from a catalog, mail a letter with payment to the agency, and they will send her to your door.

According to that article, yes I live comfortably. But I don’t know how they define live comfortably.

I drive an old paid-for truck, buy clothes at Sam's Club, and don't eat out much.

Thinking more about this and I'm interested. What exactly is your situation to not feel comfortable making 6 figures in LA?
Are you able to max out your retirement?
Do you come from a wealthy family so don't feel like you're living up?
Are you one of those people with an $800+ car note?
Do you eat out every night?
Just hard for me to comprehend.
I'm in Alabama and I make right at 120k now. I live in a barn after my divorce, have no mortgage or rent and my land and barn are paid off.
There are months that I have struggled too. I was dating a woman and you never wrap your head around how much it is to date now. First month after we broke up, I had an extra 1200 or so in my account from the last year.
My biggest issue is that I am putting about 17500 in my 401k, another 6500 in my Roth and still putting another 30% away to build a house. So my "disposable" income isn't big even with a good salary. My truck is almost paid off but the payment is 675 a month on it.
Living comfortable is a mindset for sure. I like where I am and I like what I do so I am comfortable even though I sleep on a couch in a barn with my 3 dogs.

113k in San Diego is not comfortable.

We make 200k a year with 2 kids. Small house note. One car note. The house was much more a year ago but we sold it all and downsized. Still takes it all but I’m dave Ramsey snowballing and almost there. I should see the full fruits of our efforts a year from now.

Yes I do but I am blessed to be in a high income field.
If I did not have a wife and my children - I could be comfortable on 25% of my income each year.
Not saying I would be happier - but I just don’t need 90% of what my family requires.

I wouldn't say that's an "issue". You're being responsible and putting away $24k a year in retirement.
And it's certainly not a struggle if you're able to put away that much. It takes most people several years to achieve that.

Gf and I make around 250 combined, and man a mortgage and retirement savings just blow through that. Life is just so goddamn expensive lately.

If you consider post taxes, it's probably not too far off . A one bedroom apartment in BR is around 1300, a car is about 40,00 on the low end.. etc.

I don't think their numbers are far off.
A 3bd/2bth mortgage in a decent area
A "new" used middle of the road vehicle every 5-7 years.
Enough savings rate to dodge CC debt on unforeseen stuff.
1-2 <$3k vacations/year
10% to a 401k.
That seems like a pretty fair assessment of living comfortably
