So, I ran to Walmart for a few items yesterday morning. Hadn't been in a store in a while, but do have Walmart plus and do make some online purchases for delivery or pickup.

Anyway, went in the store, got a few things and left. When I got home I had an email from Walmart that my purchase history now includes my instore purchases, and sure enough my receipt for what I just bought instore was there.

It's fine, but I didn't use my phone while in the store, so I guess their app, without you doing anything, recognizes you are in a store, and I guess when you pause at the checkouts, it associates the checkout with you?

I get how Sams does it with scan and go as I'm actively making my purchase with the app, but how does Walmart know that purchase was me if I don't indicate it while in the store or at check out?

Just wait until WalMart sells this data to your health insurer and your rates go up because you bought a 30 pack of Miller Lite.

Did you use a credit/debit card?

ETA: And even though you didnt use your phone, doesnt mean there arent apps on your phone collecting and selling your data.

Yes.

Its also how they know you are at the store when you check in to pick up your groceries.

Wait til you realize they are tracking your every movement in the store.

Which aisles you go to first. What products you stop in front of. The speed you walk. The route you take.

All that meta data gets saved and used to determine store layouts and product positioning and all that kinda shite

Did you check out with a card that is linked to your online profile?

My guess is that’s what it is. The app wouldn’t be able to link your purchase to you even if it knew you were physically in the store.

In the terms:

When you buy items in-store, we make it easy to see those items on Walmart.com. You can view previously bought items, start a return, and add protection plans from your Purchase History.

When you use a payment card in-store that’s saved in your Walmart.com account, we’ll automatically add your store purchase to your online purchase history – there’s nothing more for you to do. We’ll also add other store purchases made with saved cards in the last 12 months. We'll email you the first time we add a store purchase to let you know it’s available in your account.

To opt-out:
Select Account.
Select Communications & privacy.
Select Store purchases.
Switch the toggle to Off.
Remember, even if you opt-out of store purchases, your Purchase History will still show purchases made with Walmart Pay and any store receipts you’ve scanned with the Walmart app.

It’s the same credit card and it’s one of the primary reasons Walmart doesn’t want to allow Apple Pay. Because of the tokenization they can’t build a profile on you based on credit card number. Which then means they can’t target you based on that profile as well as sell your information to data brokers.

It’s all connected. Walmart plus also allows scan and go like Sam’s you didn’t even need to go through a check out.

Home Depot does this. They know it’s you based off the credit card.

Your card tied you to the purchase, but thats at most stores that have an app involved. They also have facial recognition for theft. So if you've ever "cheated" self checkout and a red box shows up on the camera screen, you're in their database, as well as any other company that shares it.

Many stores are now automatically signing you into their wifi due to your carrier. This allows them lots of access (and under new FISA) some FED access. It is a privacy intrusion disguised as free WiFi/off loading.

ATT passpoint grabs by default. You can’t unjoin only can turn off wifi. Home Depot also does this.

Xfinity is bad as well.
