...you have me on the fence here.

Public service salaries are garbage. One of the perks is that the government writes off the debt after a number of years of service. It's more of a bonus than a forgiveness.

Their taxpayer paid salary includes a bonus of student debt being paid for.

Good or bad, it isn't the typical forgiveness situation. The fact that he's an idiot is less suprising.

That doesn't matter. You knowingly signed up for something to pass your financial obligations onto others. $200k forgiven for 10 years means you probably really didn't even take that much of a pay cut.

Every time I see someone go after Trump for his bankruptcies, people defend him for intelligently taking advantage of laws to his benefit.

But now people should avoid taking advantage of clearly defined, intentional laws to their benefit?

Has congress passed legislation allowing you to do this?

If not, I have no idea why that would be a relevant analogy.

I'd like to revise my previous position. Burn them all at the stake.

I'd rather see them all die than agree with this fricking guy.

All loans get forgiven at 20-25 years anyways.

Not only that, taxpayers are paying their salary also. These people can't survive without the government. Just as bad as welfare queens!

It does matter.

If Congress passed legislation that lets people write off their student loans after working a government job for 10 years, anyone with hefty loans (especially in a useless field) is an idiot for not doing so. The blame isn't with them for taking advantage of the system, it's with those who created the system and those who continue to vote for people who pass such self-destructive legislation.

This is no different than someone taking advantage of some tax break to avoid paying more in taxes.

I thought you needed a little more than just paying for 20 years

And has probably been taking advantage of the mortgage interest tax deduction for most of their adult lives, yet see nothing ironic about their position

I thought you couldn’t get rid of outstanding student loans even in bankruptcy?

Were you confused about how loans are supposed to work when you borrowed the money?

Nope. Took a pretty big paycut to work for a nonprofit to qualify for PSLF.

I had to write a 5k check when I filed taxes last week myself. You aren't doing me any favors

But the paycut (in total) was obviously less than the forgiveness amount, right? Otherwise, why do it?

It’s a little more complicated than that, but close enough that I wouldn’t say you’re “wrong”. But for anyone who wants detail, scroll to the bottom: LINK
