Until then, there would be zero difference except local retards instead of state retards depositing my check.
Which is easily the better option.

Do you honestly believe this will be the outcome?
At this point, I would not mind giving it a shot. What we are doing clearly isn't working.
At least then, the people deciding to raise my taxes are local politicians whom it is much easier for me to meet with / talk with.

Then we need to cut state spending that much, right?
So what can the state cut?
Let's start with all local special inteest projects. Any funding for a project that is not owed by the state or a state agency.
Next, let's raise the requirments for TOPS.
Third, let's cut public school funding, as local parishes would likely make up the difference with property taxes.
Am I am 4.6 billion yet?

I don’t think you are, but you are off to a great start.

If you're making in excess of a couple of hundred thousand a year, this sounds great.
But if Grandma is living off a pension and/or social security, her property tax, vehicle permits, handicap tag, and sales tax will hurt her.
If property taxes rise, even non-government assisted renters will be effected when their rates go up.
The state is going to collect money in some kind of fashion.

That cash is coming from a government handout. Field not leveled.
Good point. I was referring to/thinking about guys that come across and get actual jobs like roofing/framing/farming and getting paid cash under the table. They don't pay income tax now, but a flat consumption tax would be paid when they spend it.

question for the floor: how high of a sales tax would you be willing to take if it meant no income and property taxes?
Wouldn't need to increase much, because everyone pays consumption taxes.

quote:I have two issues with property taxes.
If you dont like your property tax then move to a smaller lot/house
The first is a philosophical one: I detest the idea of having to pay rent to the government for property you own, and if you don’t pay that rent, the government confiscates your property. That doesn’t sound like ownership.
The second is a practical one: there is zero chance property values will be determined consistently and fairly. We’ve all heard the stories of small houses getting hiked at every sale while mansions stay within families and keep old appraisals at fractions of their real value. That issue balloons as property taxes go up.
If we are going to have taxes, frick income taxes and frick property taxes. Let’s move 100% to sales taxes. And if anyone wants to cry about them being regressive, let’s send everyone a “refund” of a couple thousand dollars to cover a kind of “standard deduction” for “essentials”.
A fair tax system and annual stimulus all rolled into one.

100%. I even pay "property tax" on shite like the furniture in my offices. That is frickin ridiculous. My company makes money, gets taxed. My company buys office stuff or tools, gets taxed. Then my company has to pay taxes for possessing things I paid taxes on when I bought them with money I paid taxes on when I made. Outta control.

Some stats from FY 2022:
Income tax collections 4.55) Billion 29.2%
Sales tax collections 4.970 Billikn 31.8%
It’s about the same. So if you replaced the income tax with state sales tax the state sales tax rate would be doubled (roughly). About 9%.
Of course you would also pay the local sales taxes. In EBR the total would be 14.95%
As for property tax, the state doesn’t have one.

Next, let's raise the requirements for TOPS.
Louisiana is educating other states workforce through tops. I say that if you graduate from a Louisiana college with tops then move out of state you have to pay it back.

LA sales tax rate is already 2-3% higher on average than MS and TX. If you raise the sales tax too much higher, now you're just encouraging people to either shop online at sites that don't automatically add sales tax or make the extra drive to MS or TX to make their big ticket purchases because the sales tax difference is worth the trip.
They're also talking about taxing services. Imagine having to pay a 9% sales tax everytime you hire a lawn guy, a lawyer, or sell your house.

Property tax needs to go too. Only sales tax should be allowed.
Either this OR only property owners should be allowed for any property taxes.

First off I don't have any answers and I'm not an expert, just someone who lives in Louisiana and pays a good bit of taxes. It seems like the state has very ambitious plan most of which stop taxes (eliminating break tags, concealed weapons permits, and personal income taxes) while wanting to give money away for private schools and turning down some fed money (which most of it has dem strings tied to it). I don't see how they can reduce the money the state takes in without reducing our spending. And if you think reducing tax breaks is the answer, those benefiting from those tax breaks (who are also big donors to the politicians) will claim that it will kill businesses

Talk about hyperbole.
Owning property is so unbearable it’s probably the most highly sought after asset class in existence.

You’re ignorant as hell and clearly haven’t researched this topic at all.
