If Willie didn’t see this team is better with Jonas than Larry tonight then he never will.

They didn’t have an answer for his size and power even though Giannis and Lopez are big guys. Jonas is just in another level of tough. He destroyed Bobby Portis to the point he will be having nightmares of 7 foot Lithuanians. Larry had 3 easy layup or dunk baskets that I counted but he was too scared to put the ball up and passed instead. Larry should play his role as Jonas’ backup, he still has value there, but he shouldn’t play more than 22-25 minutes. Also has anyone noticed Jonas is blocking shots this year? Larry must have some very compromising pics of Willie somewhere. Huge win though. We stole one that we all probably thought would be a loss. Now frick it let’s get Dyson back and smother Boston with our defense.

yeah, if Larry is closing playoff games, I don't like our odds

It depends on the matchup.

At this point, it really doesn't

yes it does
the pels match up well in the middle with some teams and get boatraced against others. Member how they made ayton look like wilt chamberlain?

Larry did nothing to stop Ayton either. I think thats the point. If Larry doesn’t give you an advantage defensively than go to JV who’s gives you a rebounding and scoring advantage.

I'm not high on Larry either, but he is hitting 45% of his corner threes this year.
I also don't like how when JV was in the game, they kept running picks with him. Go run a play to get him the ball on the block early in the shot clock and make the defense double him or pay the price. All it does when he goes set a pick is clog the paint b/c his man isn't going to go gaurd him at the top of the key.
and also having him under the goal leads to offensive rebounds, like when CJ drove and put up a floater that Lopez tried to block, leaving JV all alone to get the putback.

I really wonder with Larry struggling, Willie not ok with JV on defense that when BI comes back he just takes Larrys spot. BI, Trey and Zion are starting to rebound much better and the closing lineup of BI, Trey, Zion, Cj and Herb may be the way to go. At the end of the day your closing with your 5 best players.

that's what everyone assumes it should be, but when they are on the court together this year they have been horrific.
It's been just 34 minutes spread out over 15 games, but they have an ORtg of 87 and a DRtg of 110. NetRtg of -22.6
The numbers say they are terrible together, but i think anyone with a brain would say they are the ideal closing lineup against anyone but Denver or Philly, unless Zion shows he can push a guy like Jokic or Embiid out the paint and defend them well, which he should be able to do.
Zion needs to start gaurding guys like Giannis and the other superstars. He doesn't need to the whole game, but late game possessions, he should take them. He's quick enough and strong enough to stay in front of anyone in the league.

A lot of this may have been due to Zion, BI and even Trey bad early defense and rebounding early in the season. But I will say all 3 have picked it up on that end. We ran it against the cavs- BI was picking up Allen and was doing great. Willie never went back to it for some reason. To me I think thats the playoff closing lineup.

Maybe because that isn't true.
As I posted in the game thread, the combined +/- numbers for Jonas and Larry since January 1st are:
Jonas: +100
Larry: +105

Larry really sets better interior screens for Zion to get clear paths to the basket. He's just a better fit for Zion than JV is. And, as I posted in the game thread, the improved rebounding from Zion and Trey is helping cover for Larry's weakness on the boards -- Trey's rebound at the end of the game last night was outstanding.

The defense hasn't been bad.
It's the offense.

Really suprised by this, that BI is the one defending the 5 like that. But i do really like that he's phsyically strong enough to do that now. 2 years ago that wasn't even close to being an option. He really has gotten a lot stronger over the last 2 years.

Im sorry im not buying this. Larry’s defender always comes off him and doubles Zion. Then when Larry gets the pass he either misses point blank shots or doesn’t attempt them. He may set a better screen but it doesn’t matter if his defender ignores him. And great Trey is rebounding but your center HAS to rebound. He cant play 30 minutes and have 2 rebounds thats absurd.

It depends on the matchup.
Right now, the way Larry is playing, I can't see any possible argument where it would make sense based on a matchup for Larry to play more than Val.
I mentioned it last night, the reasons Larry plays and the reasons he finishes are theoretical, but they're not actually happening.
Larry isn't good on defense. Larry is playing some drop coverage too. Larry didn't even bother to hedge on a Dame P&R last night in the clutch and gave Dame an easy wide open 3. Val could have done that and given us a pulse on offense at the 5 and much better rebounding.
Larry should be able to guard Giannis better than Val...in theory. But he can't and he didn't last night.
When all the "stuff" is applied and the games are played, Val is just so much better than Nance right now that Val should get 25+ minute and close every single game until Nance shows he can be more like earlier in the season Nance and less like a shell of that guy.

Willie is well aware of The strengths and weaknesses of Nance and Jonas.
There are some matchups that favor Nance, as this board has pointed out in the past.

Giannis torched everyone last night, no question. I'm not saying Val was doing a good job or would have done a good job if he guarded Giannis more. But I am saying that Nance was doing no better than Val. We saw no improvement or no slowdown or containment going from Val to Nance.
Val started the 3rd quarter last night and played 4 minutes. Once Nance came into the game, Giannis scored a million points in a row. Nance entered with 8:09 to go in the 3rd, and Giannis scored 17 points from that mark to the 2:22 mark. Val could have done the same job defensively, and given us better offense and rebounding, no?

If Trey and Zion weren’t rebounding at such an effective rate, it would be a much more glaring issue. But because of those guys have picked it up on the boards, it masks just how truly bad Larry has been instead of Jonas. If Larry was better offensively, we wouldn’t be this worried. Maybe WG is trying to help Larry get into a rhythm and shake off some injury rust he’s still having. My guess is the opposite, though.
And unfortunately I think this could be a reason we get bounced in the first round instead of making a run to the WCF.
