Naval base next to ghetto puts up barriers to keep out stray bullets

A story posted last summer, but the first I've seen of this.
The Navy got tired of stray gunfire from the Hood, so they constructed a barrier of shipping containers between the base and housing projects. They're probably going to end up building a... wait for it... Big. Beautiful. Wall.
Wonder how that's coming?

More than 20 shipping containers line the south side of a Navy base in Gulfport, Mississippi. They’re not there to transport goods, but instead stand as a silent marker of the gun violence afflicting the state’s second-largest city.
The hulking boxes were put in place last fall, after gunfire at a subsidized apartment complex across the street damaged five homes inside the Naval Construction Battalion Center; no one was hurt. The base responded by increasing patrols around its perimeter and making one of the most fortified areas of Gulfport even more so.
“The optics of that are very bad,” said John Whitfield, a pastor and the CEO of Climb CDC, a nearby nonprofit focusing on workforce development. “The practicality of it, I understand.”
A spokesperson at the base said the barrier is meant to be a “temporary solution” and that the city had offered assurances that it was addressing the gun violence issue. Still, the Navy is considering building a permanent concrete wall.
“The force protection of our base, personnel, and families is our highest priority,” Becky Shaw, the spokesperson, said in an email.

We don’t call it Glock Port for nothing… the Gulf Coast is showing becoming a hole. Even Ocean Springs is starting to feel the mass exodus of only finest from Pascagoula, Gulfport, Biloxi, Moss Point and Mobile.

Just move the firing range to that area.

So glad that I quickly turned down the idea of moving to South Mississippi

It's funny, because black Facebook will swear that there are still half a dozen sundown towns in South Mississippi, Long Beach being one of them.
The William Bell apartments that are throwing lead at the seabee base are maybe 200 yards outside Long Beach city limits.

Seems cut and dry to me. National security issue.
If the thugs won’t behave, convert that place into base housing or storage or whatever and move the current residents out.
Honestly WTF.

Probably cheaper to build a concrete wall for the hundred yards or so that they need.

The important thing for that base to do is to ask the people that live next to it if that wall is triggering or seen as a micro aggression. If so, then the whole base should just move and allow for minorities to live on it for free

Sucks for those in the 2 story houses they got the short straw.
Most cities value their bases and would condemn the apartments and raze them to protect their cash cow base.

the city had offered assurances that it was addressing the gun violence issue.
And nothing will get done, things won't get better, they'll get worse, because the actual problem is not being addressed by politicians and bureacrats from local governments all the way to federal. The guns aren't violent, but we're all idiots for believing the government can solve our problems in the first place.

This would be just like kicking an ant pile. They’ll just move elsewhere
