Why West Virginia?

The other places seem to all have an obvious set of reasons.

It's the poorest state in the Union

ETA: Why the downvotes? WV and Mississippi are consistently the two poorest states in the country on every list you look at.

We've gutted the coal industry there.

Pretty much the same reason as Louisiana.
They built their economy around a natural resource. General populace isn't very educated. Tendency to elect incompetent populist good ole baws.

Your President declared war on coal.

The next guy loves beautiful clean coal. So there is hope for WV.

The state is run by a morbidly obese coal baron, who also owns the Greenbrier resort, who is grifting off the state and not combatting the opiod epidemic nor is he trying to make WV desirable for people to live there.
Like other states it's controlled by GOP and they are stripping schools, universities and peoples human rights away to appease a MAGA voters. That's what it is. That's the hard truth. Who wants to live in any state where your freedoms are taken away?

My wife is WV born and raised. It’s a sad state. Beautiful, but a disaster.

West Virginia coal industry is dying and they have very little to replace it. It’s a beautiful state though and great to visit.

Same reason people leave Louisiana, opportunity for industries not tied to oil or lawyers.

40% of Appalachia is abandoned, 45% is on drugs, the last 15% retired from the coal mines and watched their kids move, get hooked on drugs, or die. That whole state is in awful, awful condition. It truly is sad to see in person - I've driven through towns that look like everyone left in 1990 and didn't bother bringing anything with them. You'd think you were on the set of a post zombie apocalypse movie.

They were paying people $12,000 to move there in 2020-2021. These people probably are starting to realize that the squeeze wasn’t worth the juice.

Coal mining.

Resource based locals are bust and boom. Their future is determined more by politics than markets.

For all intensive porpoises, West Virginia doesn't even have an economy now that coal is on the out.
