re: Cabin air filters? Necessity or a rip off

Critical. It's a drastic help in the south with all the oak tree pollen and dust and shite. I keep mine changed. It's a 5 minute job with most vehicles

Somehow I don't believe this. We had vehicles for decades with A/C but no cabin air filter.
Do you think auto AC evaporator coils today are manufactured with the same robustness than they were made 20 to 30 years ago? I can tell you with confidence your house HVAC evap coil is not.
Keeping it clean by changing a $50 filter every few years is a whole lot cheaper than $2-3K evap coil replacement where the whole dash has to come out to replace it.

Things change. We also had decades of vehicles not being fuel injected, not having ABS, having manual windows, etc.
Go pull your cabin filter and look at how gross it is. They routinely catch all kinds of dirt and leaves. If you pull your filter the thing that is directly below it is the blower fan. If you didn’t have the filter all that shite would get caught in the fan and seize it.

DIY and yes they get dirty

You guys keep vehicles long enough to need to change a filter?

I'm not disagreeing. So about 6 weeks ago I vacuumed everything off of the cabin filter and placed it back. Today I did the exact same thing (actually got it even cleaner) but my maintenance code/wrench sign refused to clear. So I bit the bullet and went to O'Reilly's. Of course they (and Autozone across the street) only had the $45 filter in stock. I put the new one in and voila, the code cleared. I just find this a little strange. How can a car be so "smart" that it knows the difference between a cleaned old one versus a brand new one. That's all I'm saying, just strange that it can sense this shite. Just read a car blog saying I should have used force air into the blower motor compartment of the air filter to trick my sensor and clear the code with the cleaned older filter.

a clogged filter can cause a/c systems to prematurely fail. Change the damn thing according to driving conditions/timely.

My son has a Dodge Ram and wasn't cooling that great during the warmer months. Someone suggested changing the cabin filter, that thing was extremely dirty. Now it seems to be doing just fine.

The cabin air filter is probably the easiest thing you can change out on a car and it's a hell of a lot cheaper to do than what a Quick Lube will charge.

Necessity
Yes. You can buy one for $40 or less and replace it yourself once a year. Will keep your AC running better.

If I don't change mine in the F150 once a year, the a/c smells like arse at startup.

My 2011 checy doesn’t even have one, so yeah it’s a rip off
Posted on 3/2/24 at 4:33 pm to Tomatocantender
My local Ford dealership maintenance dept will tell you it needs to be replaced, even though you just replaced it a week ago... just sayin'

Wonder if it’s based on air flow measurement? Vacuuming it would get the large stuff but dust/pollen/particulates could still be embedded in the filter media and restricting air flow.
In any event, I just by a new one. You can get them pretty cheap for every model of car and the cheap ones aren’t any different than the expensive ones IMO.

I forgot to replace mine one 1000-mile interval and I had to be life-flighted out after the jaws of life saved me from mold poisoning.

This is probably the correct answer. I'll admit the cleaned older filter wasn't nearly as white as the new one, even though I vacuumed out all the big stuff. I'm going to try the keyboard duster can trick next time inside that slot.

I changed mine while menstruating...... I was grouchy about it, but it wasn't hard.
