Jordan Jefferson (DT) puts up 34 reps on bench at NFL combine

Baw is strong. He does have relatively short arms at 33 1/8" for someone 6' 3" which helps on bench.
Wingo had 25 reps for comparison. Verse from FSU is second at 31 reps so far.
Jefferson will end up being at least a good backup/rotational DT for some team.

He's a beast. Really wish we had another year of him, I think he will be on rosters in the league for a while.

It's so insane they use 225 for world class athletes that weight 75 pounds more than that.At the very least guys should be repping their weight. JJ doesn't make the rules though, and 34 reps is really good.

Look out, we got a badass over here

Don't really know how they came across as me trying to be a badass. One could just objectively get a better view of ones actual strength with a little bit higher weight, bc at some point it becomes more about muscular endurance than strength with reps that high. Also most of these guys are fast twitch and strong as hell, I say let them choose the weight they want to use to best show their strength.

There was a punter a few years ago that had 25 reps on the bench.

He was the most underrated player on the team this year. Everytime he was in the game he was getting to the quarterback. Whoever drafts him is getting a steal.

Jefferson, Shand and Swinson impressed me last season. That was some very good depth.

They use a standard size for all the players. Most players weigh between 200-250 pounds.

You just answered your own question. This is a better athletic metric than pure strength.

Jefferson was so clearly our best DT this year. I can’t understand why he wasn’t getting the bulk of the snaps.

I remember when he threw an interception and then broke the Alabama players leg that intercepted it. Baw has always been strong as an ox.

Your weight is irrelevant for bench press, because this is measuring how much you can push with your arms. You’re not lifting your own weight when you shove another player. Having shorter arms is an advantage in the bench, but that will also be an advantage on the field with respect to ability to push off. The disadvantage is not being able to push off far enough to cause your opponent to disengage, but that’s why you evaluate multiple characteristics.

I don't understand why Smith wasn't the clear backup by the end of the season.

I get what the other poster is saying, though.
Typical NFL play lasts 5-7 seconds, and the linemen lock up for about half that time.
It’s more about burst and quick twitch strength.

Yeah, Jefferson was the best interior DL this year which is why PFF graded him out the best. And the best outside DL was Swinson. Thankful that at least he came back because of the LOS guys, he was really the only one I trusted to put on a pass rush.

Dude probably made the NFL right there. Can't teach strong as a bear.

Agree- also had the fire in his belly on every play.
