The dorms were still being used in 1984? I was 9-10 years old and I remember going to football games back then and it’d seemed like that dorms were abandoned back then. Props to you, I bet you have some awesome stories. My mom graduated from LSU in the late 60’s early 70’s and lived in those dorms for a little while, she doesn’t talk much about it

I think LSU knew they were about to quit ysing them. I had almost no heat on the 5th floor. My window was cracked and they never did come fix it. I almost froze to death. I moved to the 3rd floor for next semester.

I wasn’t born yet (88) but for those of you who were around in 1984, where were you? What was your life like? Please share some of your memories from that year.

I specifically picked this year because, in a thread I did awhile back here on the OT, many of you said that 1984 was the best year of the 80’s. 1984 was also 40 years ago, so I thought it would be appropriate also to pick that year in this regard.

I was 18 for most of 1984. I turned 19 in August. I was in Galveston Texas from September of 83 until about March of 84 working for my Uncle building and rebuilding houses in Galveston after Hurricane Alicia. Worked 7 days a week, about 14 hours a day. $5 an hour cash...I was FILTHY rich! I lived in the Anchorage Motel, across the street from what is now the Pleasure Pier. The motel had been almost completely destroyed but the owner allowed some of us to live there if we worked on cleaning the place up and fixing shite. Most of the other people were ne-er do wells, including drug dealers and prostitutes and pimps. I had a ball. I got to do some fishing and even managed to buy a Rail Buggy and keep it running enough to run up and down the beach. I moved back to Atlanta in March of 84 because I had a test to get into an apprenticeship program and the bream were on bed when I got home and I had enough money I had saved that I spent almost the entirety of March 84 - September 84 fishing, drinking, doing drugs and getting, or trying to get, laid. I went to work in September for $4.75 and hour and lived in a camper with no water (I showered in the house of the people I rented the camper from) until about February of 1985. I was driving a 1969 Pontiac Catalina about 80 miles a day for about $30 take home pay....and living large. I bought a 1236 Jon boat and hunted ducks and fished out of that little boat a bunch. I hauled it on top of that Pontiac.

Dating consisted of hanging out at friends houses with your girlfriend getting stoned and watching MTV. We might go to dinner and a movie but mostly just went to one friends place to another when not working. Basically I worked, fished, hunted, tried to get laid and either drank or did drugs, in that order, in 1984. Basically the same shite 18 year olds do in 2024.

The 80’s were just the best overall decade IMO. It had almost everything you could want at the time.

In 1984 I was working my steady job to support my family as I had been doing for the prior 30 years. After office hours it was back home to the farm to do what needed to be done to care for the livestock and crops. Good times.

If I was anything like my toddler at the same age, probably cock-blocking my dad 24/7.

14 pages & has anyone mentioned Catfish Town? It opened in 84 and bombed not too long after. But was really cool, at least that’s what the 12 year old me recalls.

I was in college and had a daughter born in November of 83. Working full time as well. With all of that, it was a grand old time to me.

Well, since Teatiger already spilled the beans…..

I was a 17 yr old Sr with a fake ID. Snuck beer out the back door of the convenience store that his dad owned, drank until blackout drunk at the sharecropper shack we rehabbed; cruised the Ville in my Prelude or my BFFs Z28. Open containers at Tribal Spirits and driving drunk because it wasn’t that big of a deal. Dated a cheerleader or the drill team captain; Discovered a new world via MTV. Prince, Madonna, Billy Idol, Bruce Springsteen. Senior trip to FWB unsupervised with the GF. Cash’s, Kool and the Gang, Mountains of Busch, Boones Farm.

Fraternity rush parties, Critters Creek, floating on the bayou, Dragons Lair and Joust at Pioneer Pizza or the 7-11 next to Rays PeeGee.

Rush week, Bid Night, beer bongs, drinking straight from the tap of the Miller Light truck, Shopping cart keg on Girls Bid Day, getting kisses from the Sorority chicks for the newest pledges.

Huge classes for all my pre- med/ pre-law classes. Quarter beer and starting fights with the Kappa Sigs at Murphy’s. Smiths/ Depeche Mode/ Guadalcanal Diary. Louie’s, Mr Gattis. New Generation. Sneaking under the bench on the patio at Fred’s to get in. Piledrivers. Friday afternoons pulling the couch onto the front lawn rocking Steve Miller, Van Morrison, REM. Waiting in the lobby of Herget or Miller for your date. Saving seats in the student section. Tiger Football. Sugar Bowl.

It will never get better than that!
