Or, he could just die. Is that better?

How much is he paying vs. the company?

Some of the better bi polar meds can be $400 a month. Even with Cadillac insurance.

I had an antibiotic that was $500 my insurance kicked it back. The doctor sent me a coupon from LCMC and it made it $65 outside insurance. I didn't get it.
Usually I only pay $4-10 a script. But I needed this medicine apparently.
Though it's made me sick every day.

This sucks, a lot, but it’s the reason why there are any medical advancements at all. You ever taken something developed by, say, the UK NHS in the past 50 years? Probably not, and you likely never will.

It would be extremely nice to not have the US shoulder the entire r&d burden. There’s something fricky going on when the US sells medications here for $1000’s that people can get in other countries for free. What motivates US companies to not care about profits from other countries? How can it be fixed without further messing up what should be a free market?

So, it was better before 2010? My platinum insurance used to be awesome too. I thought everyone got "comprehensive health reform" in 2010. Around about the time FedGov took over student loans.

Seems to have turned out ... you rate it.

Yeah no actually that bullshite made it harder for middle and upper income folks to get access to good mental health care.

But hey! Go to an allergy clinic these days and tell me who litters the lobby waiting for their weekly allergy shots.

That's actually a slice I haven't considered, I couldn't do it because I traveled too often, even though I should.

There are two aspects to where I'm going.

1) What is "middle and upper class?" Specify.
2) What is "good" mental health care? Try to specify.

I don't know if you've met anyone from state mental health care or child protective services, but it's not something to desire.

I can't remember where the saying came from, but it used to be "the rich are the people that make $5k more a year than you." Clearly 80s rates, but the principle still applies.

“ The U S population pays for the R&D for the new drugs while other countries don’t contribute”

Actually lots of drugs are developed in other countries-the European nations account for 1/3 of drugs invented,Asian countries account for just over 7%.The US accounts for slightly over 50%.

Just a few drugs developed overseas:Herceptin-oncology drug
Avastatin- a monoclonal antibody
Xarelto- oral anticoagulant
Eylea-treatment for wet macular
degeneration
Lantus-long acting,1x/day insulin
Ivermectin- inventor recieved Nobel
Prize
There are many drugs developed outside U S if you research it.

Drug companies like to tout how much money they spend on R&D,they do spend a lot. However they spend more on marketing-advertising,drug reps to influence Drs.and lobbyists to influence Congress on drug legislation.
According to Dr. Abramson in his book I referenced the drug companies collectively employ 3 lobbyists for every member of Congress.

Think they don’t spend big money on marketing-wife and I went to a American Academy of Cardiology convention in N O once.Several drug companies collectively rented a cruise ship for lodging for Drs.and their wives.Ship was anchored in the Mississippi River and there were boats running 24 hours a day to shuttle Drs and wives to and from shore.
We weren’t Drs. so we didn’t qualify.

“Esteemed” agencies such as American Heart Association,American Cancer Society,American Academy of Pediatrics,on and on,all get significant funding from drug companies. They try to conceal a lot of it but one can find it if you do some digging.

R&D is some. The largest part is the rebates/kickbacks the drug manufacturers are forced to pay the insurance companies. That is roughly 70%.

How about Humira? A friend of mine who has Crohn’s disease gets it delivered. He has to be there as soon as it arrives, because it’s worth thousands of dollars. I think it comes in shot form.

No health insurance?

Not being hostile, but a pharmacy benefits manager can nix coverage for anything you are on. I’ve been on a medication covered by this insurance company for two years. It turned my health around for the better. The pharmacy benefits manager just denied it, asking for a pre-authorization from the physician and then turned that down. $600 out of pocket per month, which pales in comparison to some.
