5g hacks

one of my past gigs was running adversarial operations against 5G networks in a lab
I'm not certain what's causing all the issues today, but since I'm not a crawfish farmer this is the most I can contribute to the OT today
First, the phone (UE) is fine. Don't know why they're behaving differently, some connecting and some not. Could be issues with individual RF bands. Not from jamming or anything but from some bad update pushed to the tower radios (RAN) - that'd explain the cross-carrier and intermittent issue.
Hacking 5G is hard af. Segmented networks behind diodes, redundant servers, encrypted radios etc., so a regular old hack or DDOS attack doesn't make sense to me. Maybe someone got into the Verizon/ATT databases and just deleted a bunch of random rows
Insider threat? Sure, the 5G architecture is flat and doesn't have certificate checking internally or anything. Once you're the network it's super easy to push some bad update to any function, such as the AMF node (controls access) on the control plane. The AMF is the target for any 5G attack since it controls authentication and that's what I'd do. Oh and with 5G the equipment can be shared amongst carriers, called a MORAN core, so affecting the underlying core network screws up whoever is running on it in that region
Best guess is a bad update pushed out to AMFs or just a corrupted database.

Man, thank God for nerds.

Maybe you can try again on the summary for those of us who don’t do this for a living, I don’t know what an AMF is, how long a corrupted database would last, or why this would be affecting my non-5G phone
ETA: thank you for the breakdown though

I read something just a little bit ago that some anonymous "industry insider" said he has heard it has to do with the way ATT hands off calls from one network to the next. He called it "peering" I think.
I have no expertise in this area but maybe you can glean something from that.

Since this happened overnight I assumed some kind of bad update to the network. Cyberattack would be timed for critical times like morning commute or something.
It's def a test run either way

I would guess a bad update. Corrupt database would've been rolled back hours ago. Bad update can take longer to rollback if the ITSM is a mess, which they almost always are

I read your entire post like I knew what you were talking about, when in fact none of it made much sense except for

Here... I thought AMF was bowling alleys

That was an awesome explanation, of which I unfortunately understood almost none lol

I heard there are 3 guys who make all decisions and set the price for everything AT&T. They are also looking for the Louisiana governor to get them a bailout.

So it’s probably not the retroencabulator?
