Just banged into this, somehow this flew under the radar, renewing your Amateur Radio license now carries a $35 fee. Apparently this just started April 2022.

Not that the fee is going to break anyone as it's every ten years, it just pisses me off that the feds are again quietly going after a pound of flesh anywhere they can take it. This money grab targeting the roughly 750,000 licensed folks in the US.

What? You expect to be able to talk freely on the free airwaves in this country? Sheesh man, you must think you live in the land of the free or something...

I’d be more worried about storing the equipment in a way that protects it from potential emp strikes.

They got this in under the radar specifically because only 3/4 of a million people care about it.

Larger constituencies would have burned Congress to the ground over less.

The FCC. They have people whose job it is to just drive around checking signals and looking over licenses.

The FCC. Never underestimate nerds in the government. They have endless time and resources to find ways to restrict your freedom.

I'd rather user fees support federal agencies than income taxes. The FCC should be self-funded.

Our government...

"Let's secure the border."

"No, we have MUCH more important things to worry about. There might be an unlicensed Ham radio operator out there somewhere. Priorities, man, priorities."

Eh, I don't know... Look at our taxes and how they are spent... I don't see a blaze to the north yet...

Yes, but they don't drive around at random. They focus when one person out there bitches to them about you.

so is this what happens? do they REALLY go after unlicensed broadcasters? I heard the HAM community is harder on unlicensed broadcasters than the FCC is.

Not harping on HAMs. Just generally curious as I've got a baofeng and I've configured to listen in around here. never taken the test though.
