The USD is obviously stronger than the ruble. Anything bought in Russia that is made in Russia could be much cheaper in USD than in rubles. We found the same in Poland.

Purchasing power parity.

Someone already pointed out the median per capita income is 1/4 of the US.

Go try to find imports in Russia to see how much they cost in USD. In Poland, Polish goods, restaurants and services are all very cheap, but imports and name brand items cost just as much as in the U.S., if not more.

Anyway he told me that once you get out of Moscow, Russia is a third world country. So go roughly 30 miles outside Moscow in any direction and you’re in a poor country with no infrastructure and services.
That's true for much of Europe.

it's impressive how Moscow and many large cities in Europe (certainly not Paris and similar) are seemingly very clean. I'm sure they have their share of ugly districts, though. I always wonder what the government / tax burdens are, in order to have that.

Damn, I didn't realize so many people don't understand exchange rate and economics. I have to think people aren't this dumb, but just want to believe something that fits a narrative of theirs, so they don't think too hard on it from first principles.

I mean shite, even a dumb comedy like eurotrip understood exchange rates back in the day. The internet is truly making people a little dumber and dumber, every year that goes by.

Yea I don’t get the big deal. Russian currency is a lesser value so of course when you use USD there it’s going to be cheaper. I like Tucker but this didn’t prove much.

My world geography professor in college used to talk about Central American cities being the opposite of American cities. American cities are crumbling in the middle and the rich live along the outer edges. In Central America the wealth is all concentrated in the center of the city and the extreme poor live outside often in shanty’s. I think Eastern Europe is similar. It’s tough to judge the country by the city centers.

Purchasing power in a country doesn't mean anything without considering income in that country. This is like lying by omission.

Those 104 dollar groceries are more expensive than 400 dollar groceries for an American.

In fact the American would have to pay almost $600 for the same groceries to be at a similar % of average income.

What's the per capita income in Russia though? Context matters.

ETA: Just looked it up.
Russia-$15,345
U.S.-$65,423

Tucker is excited that a week’s worth of groceries costs almost two days’ wages? The average Russian has to devote more than a third of their pre-tax wages just for food. Let that sink in.

EDIT: deducting the Russian 13% income tax rate, the average Russian has $13,350.15 annual income, divided by 52 weeks a year, renders a weekly wage of $256.73. So the average Russian has to spend 40.43% of their total take home pay to get Tucker’s basket of groceries.

That is not flattering at all.

My dad lived in Moscow for 2 years maybe 15 years ago. It's incredibly expensive. One of the most expensive cities in the world.

Most Russians live a far lower standard of living than Americans.

Why would it make someone mad that was anti Russian, to find out they pay more for groceries than us?
