Listen to this:

I worked with a gal who brought a casserole to a luncheon we had at work. I asked her for the recipe and she got kind of snippy about it. I was shocked. I tell everybody my recipes. I consider it a honor if somebody ask me for my recipe.

Has this every happened to any of you?

btw...
I am new to the board. I have been lurking and loved reading all of your post. Ya'll are all so entertaining. I especially love your "friendly disagreements" about things like how to make real gumbo and the king cake debates..
So I decided to jump in and join in all the fun.

It is a pleasure to meet you all

maybe she bought it at a grocery store deli and dumped it into one of her own casserole dishes to bring to the office

I feel the same, there's nothing about anything I cook that keep a secret. Someone asked a poster a while back about a duck pastrami recipe, we still waiting for it.

I agree. I can't stand when people have the I don't share recipes attitude.

Why not? Because you want people to think you're special and you have the best dish? It's all about wanting to be "the best" and wanting to be special.

i feel as you do, asking for the recipe is the highest compliment you can get.

but some people think its better to keep grannys recipe a secret so no one else gets to enjoy it.

had a friends GF made a killer pound cake once so i asked for the recipe, and she came right out and said she was never ever gonna share her grandmas super secret recipe

but that said, sometimes people do not want to share a recipe, and that is also ok too

Welcome!

I'm happy to share recipes. I've never declined a recipe to anyone unless I didn't really follow one and, in that case, I'll try to put one together.

I've only had one person decline sharing a dessert recipe. I think she gives the item as gifts and sometimes sells it. I recall her saying it was a family recipe and she was sworn to secrecy. Didn't really bother me and my niece pretty much tasted the dish and can make it exactly the same if not better.

Welcome. Go introduce yourself to the OT.

Real gumbo doesn't have tomatoes, and king cakes are just big cinnamon rolls.

Hey Ched,
Maybe that poster will read this thread and finally post the recipe.

I looked this up for you. Maybe it can help.

Yes SixthandBarone,
Some people are just selfish and never know the joy of sharing.

btw.
Nice to meet you.

I love your answer. I think that you have the right attitude about life.

I msgategirl will try to follow your example.

Hey ruzil,
You are probably right. It is a shame that you can't get your hands on that good lasagna. Maybe someday you can find out where she got it. You never know what life can throw at you.

Yes. It's very strange. Usually just selfish or narcissistic people do that.

I like giving out my recipes. I rarely expect them to be able to execute them the way I do anyway.

I don't know that I've ever encountered someone not wanting to share a recipe, but I would think that was weird.

I'm definitely open to sharing how I prepared something with anyone, though most of the time I don't have a set recipe, just something that I take inspiration from and go from there.

as the others said, a decision to decline a recipe request 100% means they didn’t actually make the dish

What was it. Someone here likely has the recipe.

I kind of hate when someone asks me for a recipe. Do I show them the three or five recipes that I looked at for inspiration and then explain the ways I deviated and the parts I followed and why? And then I over explain.

I wish I were better at recipes.

ETA: But when I follow a recipe, I am happy to share it.

I’ve only been denied recipes a couple times. It’s really off putting, to be honest. I’m not sure what the concern is, really, unless you are running a food business. Like many here, it’s a major compliment to be asked for a recipe. And when you share it, that person will likely credit you if somebody asks about the recipe.

Like with music, we can still live on long after our physical bodies have perished if people are still cooking our recipes. So with that, share away!

I believe that sharing a recipe is a spreading of culture. Food is one of the foundations of culture. Recipes or the way people cook and prepare their food help us to maintain our history to a certain degree. Cajun food is very generally founded in French and Spanish cooking taste and methods. With the internet and so much information floating around food history has become blurred. I think that Cajun cooks have done a good job of keeping their recipes true to form.

I agree, someone ask for my recipe or go-by for a dish and i'm flattered to share it. I'll never understand not sharing.

When I was serious about competing in Cookoffs, I had a couple of “secret ingredients” that I thought gave me an edge. I kept those to myself, but I’d always share my basics or help with techniques.
