Rant Ahead... People who don't share their recipes.

Listen to this:
I worked with a gal who brought a casserole to a luncheon we had at work. I asked her for the recipe and she got kind of snippy about it. I was shocked. I tell everybody my recipes. I consider it a honor if somebody ask me for my recipe.
Has this every happened to any of you?
btw...
I am new to the board. I have been lurking and loved reading all of your post. Ya'll are all so entertaining. I especially love your "friendly disagreements" about things like how to make real gumbo and the king cake debates..
So I decided to jump in and join in all the fun.
It is a pleasure to meet you all

maybe she bought it at a grocery store deli and dumped it into one of her own casserole dishes to bring to the office

Hey LBLarry,
I didn't even think of that. You might be on to something. :)

I feel the same, there's nothing about anything I cook that keep a secret. Someone asked a poster a while back about a duck pastrami recipe, we still waiting for it.

I agree. I can't stand when people have the I don't share recipes attitude.
Why not? Because you want people to think you're special and you have the best dish? It's all about wanting to be "the best" and wanting to be special.

i feel as you do, asking for the recipe is the highest compliment you can get.
but some people think its better to keep grannys recipe a secret so no one else gets to enjoy it.
had a friends GF made a killer pound cake once so i asked for the recipe, and she came right out and said she was never ever gonna share her grandmas super secret recipe
but that said, sometimes people do not want to share a recipe, and that is also ok too

When my father in law died, one of the mothers from school brought a pan of lasagna that was incredible. It was the best I have ever had.
Whenever I bumped into her at school, I would thank her and mention how delicious it was and if she would mind sharing the recipe. She would just brush off the request.
I figured she just bought it somewhere and was too embarassed to admit it.

Welcome!
I'm happy to share recipes. I've never declined a recipe to anyone unless I didn't really follow one and, in that case, I'll try to put one together.
I've only had one person decline sharing a dessert recipe. I think she gives the item as gifts and sometimes sells it. I recall her saying it was a family recipe and she was sworn to secrecy. Didn't really bother me and my niece pretty much tasted the dish and can make it exactly the same if not better.

Welcome. Go introduce yourself to the OT.

Real gumbo doesn't have tomatoes, and king cakes are just big cinnamon rolls.

Hey Ched,
Maybe that poster will read this thread and finally post the recipe.
I looked this up for you. Maybe it can help.

Yes SixthandBarone,
Some people are just selfish and never know the joy of sharing.
btw.
Nice to meet you.

I love your answer. I think that you have the right attitude about life.
I msgategirl will try to follow your example.

Hey ruzil,
You are probably right. It is a shame that you can't get your hands on that good lasagna. Maybe someday you can find out where she got it. You never know what life can throw at you.
:)

Yes. It's very strange. Usually just selfish or narcissistic people do that.

Isn't that true most of the time. :)

I will go on over and introduce myself at the OT board. Thanks for the advice. I wasn't sure where to introduce myself.
Also, I love opionated people. They make the best friends. We all need to have people tell us what they truly think, not tell us what we want to hear. That is one personality traits I admire the most in my close friends and family.

I like giving out my recipes. I rarely expect them to be able to execute them the way I do anyway.

I don't know that I've ever encountered someone not wanting to share a recipe, but I would think that was weird.
I'm definitely open to sharing how I prepared something with anyone, though most of the time I don't have a set recipe, just something that I take inspiration from and go from there.

Gategirl,
When you hit reply and you want to quote someone, highlight what you want to quote and then click on "quote" next to the reply box you're typing in. Much easier for others to read and faster for you as well.

I agree. I readily share any recipe anyone asks me for. I don’t see any sense in keeping something that people like a secret. One of my oldest friends, his grandmother made the best meatballs I’ve ever eaten. She was the first generation of their family to be born in America, and came from Italy. I lived next door to her growing up and you could smell them through the walls with the doors closed. 15-20 years after asking him the first time, I think I’m pretty close to him letting me have his grandmother’s recipe.
