as the others said, a decision to decline a recipe request 100% means they didn’t actually make the dish

What was it. Someone here likely has the recipe.

I kind of hate when someone asks me for a recipe. Do I show them the three or five recipes that I looked at for inspiration and then explain the ways I deviated and the parts I followed and why? And then I over explain.

I wish I were better at recipes.

ETA: But when I follow a recipe, I am happy to share it.

I've only had one person decline sharing a dessert recipe. I think she gives the item as gifts and sometimes sells it.

I recall someone writing to an advice column that they made a holiday food item that they gave as gifts. Folks would ask for the recipe, but she didn't want to share because it was her special gift item. I can understand that a little. But, frankly, 90% of the people who ask for the recipe will never make it.

Darla - What usually happens to me is Igive the recipe and ten they say, I didn't have these three ingredients, so I substituted, and the family said Aunt Jeans is better.

I do share whenever someone asks though. Sometimes I'll share even though no one asks for the recipe.

A former good friend (not former because of this though) pulled that shite with me over Brisket recipe. Claimed it was some secret family recipe, which was bullshite. And we’d been roommates and cooked a million things together in the past. Douche.
He was always a high drama type anyway.

I’ve only been denied recipes a couple times. It’s really off putting, to be honest. I’m not sure what the concern is, really, unless you are running a food business. Like many here, it’s a major compliment to be asked for a recipe. And when you share it, that person will likely credit you if somebody asks about the recipe.

Like with music, we can still live on long after our physical bodies have perished if people are still cooking our recipes. So with that, share away!

I believe that sharing a recipe is a spreading of culture. Food is one of the foundations of culture. Recipes or the way people cook and prepare their food help us to maintain our history to a certain degree. Cajun food is very generally founded in French and Spanish cooking taste and methods. With the internet and so much information floating around food history has become blurred. I think that Cajun cooks have done a good job of keeping their recipes true to form.

I agree, someone ask for my recipe or go-by for a dish and i'm flattered to share it. I'll never understand not sharing.

When I was serious about competing in Cookoffs, I had a couple of “secret ingredients” that I thought gave me an edge. I kept those to myself, but I’d always share my basics or help with techniques.

Gate girl,

Your response etiquette should be taught here on the interwebs.

Sincerely,

Mr Englishman

I agree there should be no real reason to not share a recipe unless you are selling the food product.

But unless you are new, you shouldn't have been shocked about it. It's not uncommon.

Go to YouTube and watch about 10 video of the recipe you are looking for and decide what seems like a good idea.

For example...I never use thyme, rosemary, or bay leaves...its NOT gonna happen.

And thats why I think my cooking of certain dishes is superior.

Why not? You don't like any of those herbs?

I had a good friend that wouldn't share the BBQ sauce recipe that had been passed down amongst a few of their family members. He wouldn't share it because he had sworn not to and that was because there were a few family members that had at least considered trying to commercialize it. In a case like that, I can understand not wanting to share.
