re: Lynyrd Skynyrd's performance of "Free Bird" in Oakland, CA in 1977 was PEAK America...

My Mom had this t-shirt. It was the perfect size to fit over my shoulder pads, and I ruined it by making it a cut-off and using it as my practice jersey for pee-wee football. My Dad kept the concert tickets and some cut out articles from the Advocate about the crash, but they are long lost/gone.

Younger people today don’t have the same type of a relationship with Skynyrd as you and I would.
Not even close. But that's with any music of the era. You HAD to have buy in on a group. You had to hear them for the first time on the radio, or see them on the Midnite Special. You needed a face-to-face conversation with friends to discuss their existence/greatness. You had to buy a magazine to learn details about them, and drive/get a ride to the record store to be able to listen to their music "on demand". And it cost ~$35 (adjusted for inflation) for that one album.
Now you can instantly listen to anything ever recorded on any media device you own for less than the cost of buying six albums a year. I'm not gonna lie, its a LOT easier today.

frick any down voters! I had plans to go see them at Austin Peay State Univ but they crashed the week before. I was a freshman at nearby Murray State Univ. That would have been about 4 months after this video which I have never seen.
Thanks for the memories!!!!

Killer performance.
I saw Skynyrd 4 times. Twice with Ed King in the band, once after Ed King left and once after Steve Gaines joined the band.
The band died when Ronnie died.

Anti-America movement was already alive and well at that time.

Just 4 months prior to the Skynyrd performance at Oakland, the Eagles recorded their seminal live performance of Hotel California from the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland.
LINK
Also shows just how gigantic Skynyrd was at this time. They were probably the biggest band in the world and half the band died shortly thereafter.
The light that burns twice as bright lasts half as long...

I like free bird as much as anyone, but the 1970’s can not hold the Greatest Generation’s flashlight, and will go down as the Peak Of US history ….. we are currently going to hell quickly

It’s crazy, look at the crowd..not one fat person. And the girls just seemed more naturally beautiful back then
It’s simply the fact they were not tatted or fat

Too bad they couldn’t have been in the Super Bowl tonight. Can you imagine the scene. Many decades gone , sadly

quote:I saw the "new" Skynyrd at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View across bay from Oakland in 1994, and, believe it or not, they still had a giant rebel flag up just like that one, and there was zero controversy. Hard to believe now.
Nowadays you'd have a bunch of fat, hairy-armpit women claiming they were victims of violence for having merely seen the Confederate flag
As an aside, my dad is briefly visible in this video. He's the tall ugly bastard near the center of the screen at 6:45.
I miss the old California. My family was there for generations, mostly around Sunnyvale and Palo Alto. Palo Alto was a great place to grow up in the 80's. Now all the original residents are gone, replaced by tech people, like the ones that paid 2 million for our old 900 square foot 2 bedroom with busy railroad tracks 20 feet behind the backyard.
I went back for a visit for the first time in forever two years ago and it's so bizarre to see all the same places and neighborhoods but all the people gone, replaced by folks with totally different values and outlooks, to put it nicely. The small town America vibe is gone and... well, I'll just say it, it's just a bunch of assholes now.
