Lynyrd Skynyrd's performance of "Free Bird" in Oakland, CA in 1977 was PEAK America...

before all of the anti-America and hate-filled propaganda that we are being forced-fed these days by our "American" media .... this was America in Oakland, California in 1977

I mean, the song has become a cliché but that is 11 minutes of pure greatness. A mid-70's 4th of July weekend, awesome weather, one of the best live rock bands in history, Billy Powell on the piano coked to the gills with a Bud heavy in front of him, awesome crowd video (which wasn't a thing back then) and it all wraps up with the control freak Ronnie Van Zant knowing to take a step back while Collins, Rossington, and Gaines just absolutely shredded it.

I have watched that dozens of times and beyond Skynyrd's greatness as a band and Free Bird's greatness as a song, can't help but ask 'what happened to CA since?'

Saw them on that tour. First and best concert I’ve ever seen.

You saw the remnants of them.

One of my favorite concert videos along with David Gilmour in Pompeii playing Comfortably Numb.

Their other Videos on YouTube from the 70s are also badass. Most are in black and white. No light shows, singer not running and jumping everywhere, and no autotune. Just a fantastic frontman and a kickass band behind him. They sound so good. Very professional.

Easily One of the best bands ever!

Despite what you have been told this used to be a great country.

Unfortunately true. They're just a mid grade cover band nowadays. You can catch a better skynyrd show at Whitey's twice a month vs an actual skynyrd show.

Nowadays you'd have a bunch of fat, hairy-armpit women claiming they were victims of violence for having merely seen the Confederate flag.

One of the great tragedies in rock history.

They were set for the next phase of their career which would have been as incredible as the first. RIP boys.
