Speaking of the messages in the movie I find it funny how much of an anti-capitalist message it sends while having tons of product placement. Although pretty sure that’s the point since Tyler himself is also a hypocrite

i think it's anti-chrony/corporate/consumer capitalism more than capitalism itself.

i'm pretty right wing and I can appreciate what socialism is going for most often in its' purest form. but like with the above, in an imperfect world, it gets abused.

i've always seen it more as a libertarian movie than right or left.

I wasn’t saying it was socialist or anything just that the anti-capitalist message being offset by the product placement mirrors Tyler’s own hypocrisy by telling all these men that they’ve become mindless slaves by literally having them join a cult of mindless slaves.

Huh. Feel like I’m supposed to chime in here.

There are two types of people on the world: those who watch Fight club and immediately connect with and those who rewatch Fight Club later in life and realize it’s supposed to be a satire on what we think masculinity is/was.

It all depends on the viewer’s perspective. A lot of people, including myself, relate with Edward Norton’s character. He’s an average dude who works an unfulfilling job, lives alone, is dead on the inside, and is completely numb to the outside world. Eventually, the Tyler Durden in him says “frick it, I want to FEEL like I’m alive” which is why he starts a fight club.

We all have a Tyler Durden personality inside of us. We might reel it in and keep it stored away so we can at least be presentable to society, but it never leaves us. It’s our primal instincts as male homosapiens to have a lack of empathy, be vicious, and compete with other men to be at the top of the hierarchy. It’s how we survived the Ice Age.

Yeah, by today’s standards it is. But back in the Stone Age, if you wanted to be the leader of a tribe and be able to obtain as much food and resources as possible, you HAD to be the meanest, most ferocious motherfricker towards any opposing tribes. Otherwise, you’d risk getting your entire tribe pillaged and killed.

This way of living continued all the way up to the 1600s. Then, due to the technological revolutions that occurred in the past 200-300 years, this side of homosapiens has been made dormant, at least for most people.

The climax of the movie is the narrator rejecting his relationship with Tyler (as well as all the ideas/excuses Tyler believed in) and embracing his relationship with Marla.

You completely missed the point of the movie.

Yeeeeeah this is the whole thing right here that lets you know the movie/book was satire. It appeals to teenage/college aged boys (like me when I made my handle) because it represents the shite we want to do at that age in life (say frick it all, live in a shitty house with all our friends, cause mayhem and laugh about it, feel openly angry at *gestures wildly* and experience few if any repercussions for our actions). It’s the ultimate “what if i let the impulses of my Id dictate everything i do” fantasy movie. And it’s fun as hell, don’t get me wrong.

But then you get to the end and realize Tyler is not only self destructive but outwardly destructive as well. Id left totally unchecked is disastrous on multiple levels.

And in the end, he rejects it all. Oh, and the movie is homoerotic as frick; Tyler Durden wouldn’t come across nearly as cool to guys if it was just Jason Segel walking around shirtless and stealing bags of liposuction fat to make soap

No. The game just changed but in general the spoils stayed the same. Men compete everyday it is just people like Musk, Bezos, Buffet, and Zuckerberg that are the big winners, not some Cro-Magnon man. There are also plenty of ways to compete in a more primal way everywhere you look. Sad sacks that sit at home on the couch and think of themselves as primal but do nothing to channel that until they explode are almost always just playing the victim. Get out of the house and compete even if you can't compete in the money/power game there are plenty of ways to test yourself against other men instead of brooding about how great it would have been to be born in another time when "men were men".

I know it’s only a movie, but when it’s a movie that you can relate with, it just hits different. It feels like it’s more than just a movie.

“It’s only after we’ve lost everything, that we’re free to do anything.” Probably the best quote in the film. If you’ve ever hit rock bottom in life you know what that saying means.

Luckily humanity has evolved and progressed since then. Acting like we need act like cavemen again is probably one of the worst takes I’ve seen regarding this movie.
