So many fields threatened by imported slave labor (H1B), exportation, automation, or obsoleting.
What's left to rationally consider? My oldest is leaning toward Engineering or Law, maybe both.

Anyone with a trade these days has a blank check as long as they are halfway reliable, dependable, and professional

Anything that requires both people skills AND specific knowledge.
ESLs may out-code or out-work you, but unless they’ve been here 10+ years most have the EQ of a walnut.

Contractual Law….all these companies, all the technology, all the AI generated stuff infringing on others shite. Easy as shite. Even better if the kid has a software engineering background into law school

I'm a physical therapist and people will always get hurt! Don't see automation taking my job anytime soon either. Gotta have people skills and know anatomy and physiology like the back of your hand. It is a lot of schooling though.

Whatever he chooses, tell him to stay as close to the actual content and the money as he can.
For example - in O&G, the people who always have jobs available are the ones closest to the barrel (producing company management positions with technical responsibility) or to the money (accountants). The further you are, the more risk you assume. In a downturn, service providers are hit hard, and their suppliers are always hit worse.

Even before all of the wokeness, the same moneymakers have always been the same moneymakers.

I want my son to go into turf management…or at least that concentration of agronomy. The only artificial turfs should be HS football, and thats only a cost/benefit. All pro teams should play on grass and we can grow pretty much anything indoors.
Not sure thats a major at most schools. Cant hurt to be able to grow food in the future…or drugs…

How about a career/degree in designing, engineering, or R&M on the hardware & software that run the automated processes?
