Buying a Truck when did protection plans become a thing?

Got online and have been following some trucks. They dropped the price and so I call on a $29k truck. It's a few hours away where my brother lives and they said They won't discuss pricing over the phone so my brother goes in to drive it and get a price.
That $29k truck is $37k out the door after fees and a $4k protection plan? I said take that off and they tell me it's impossible and company policy. I tell them to kick rocks. Next day same thing on a different truck. When did this become a thing? It's like car dealerships invent ways to make people hate them more.

Even if you don’t buy it they will still call to talk to you about it.

Make a clear statement that you are not going to pay that and walk. Just keep shopping.

This is what I did.
Almost bought one last month. Told the guy my price and he couldn't come off his number that much. Text me a week later to let me know he sold the truck at full price and I said "congrats, let me know if you come across anything else you think I'd be interested in".
He responds with "maybe next time you won't ask me to come off $3k on asking price". I told him "well you guys had no problem asking people to come up $9k during covid so what's the difference?" No response

So, what you are gonna find is that you won’t have a choice but to pay for it.
Don’t think for two seconds one dealership might be able to find a way not to charge you for it.
They all do it.
It’s complete BS but you about to piss yourself off finding this answer out for a few months

Its the new thing now. Issue is people are doing it so they will continue to add it. They get a percentage I'm sure. But ive had the same thing on a used car. After you start talking numbers and see final price, I'm like what. Forced gap, tire and wheel protection, and there was another. Almost 4k. I said i dont need or want this. After trying to convince me on why i did i finally said dude. Take it off. He walks away and comes back and says his boss said he won't sell me the car without it. I said frick off

I got GOT on a truck in May 2023.
My kid got his license so I passed our family car to him and bought a brad new F150 STX.
First "NEW" vehicle I've ever owned.
I was in the sales office so long with this and that thrown at me by the time it was over all I wanted was to leave. I'm sure they do this on purpose.
I now have a new truck with a warranty, a service plan and a wheel and tire / windshield plan

Pretty sure it’s for them to gps monitor it in case you miss your payment. I’d ask if you pay in full if they’ll remove it.

I had already told them I was paying cash

It's stuff like this that makes me want to go to dealerships on Saturdays in the middle of the summer with zero intentions of buying a car just to waste their time.

This is a level of pettiness I live for

Maybe next time, my commission goes to someone who doesn’t act like a dick regardless of what I pay, dick.

High margins on protection plans and extended warranty. Trying to do what they can to maintain the profits since msrp extra charges are starting to go away.
Pro tip:
You can buy an extended warranty at any time up to when your factory warranty is about to expire. There are several dealers from the various manufacturers who are know for selling nearly at cost warranties(they make their money volume and not margin). So when you get close to the end of your factory warranty and you think you may want to keep the vehicle longer, can consider purchasing the warranty or product then if you find it may have value to you.

Went with a friend car shopping a few months ago. The dealership we went to said any car purchased from them will have a protection package on it and it’s non-negotiable, but they can negotiate on the price they charge for it.
While on the lot, I stepped away and called a direct competitor (same make) and asked them straight up if they required any sort of package on their vehicles and was told no.
I returned and informed the sales guy and he changed his tune entirely — “…well yeah the owner of the dealership has made exceptions before. I’ll talk to him…”
Damn snakes. I hate them all.
These mandated packages are nothing but dealer greed.

Tell them you’ll pay $4K for the protection plan when they come down $4k on the price.

Wait wait wait wait…. This a-hole salesman texts you and rubs your face in a sale and then chastises you for bargaining??
I’d forward that crap to the sales manager along with a statement that dealership is off limits to you and your cash and you will be telling everyone that listens about that crap.

Yeah no shite. If that MFer texted me afterwards to gloat and essentially talk shite, I would not have handled that well in his favor. I’d have gone nuclear to his boss and even higher in the company to get him in as much trouble as possible.
Also, with these “protection plans” mentioned in this thread. Do vehicles not come with warranties anymore? Isn’t that what your “protection plan” is when you buy a vehicle? WTF?

It is out of control and I saw where a Nissan dealership in the northeast area has a class action lawsuit against them for this practice

No clue. Seems like an extended warranty with a different name.

This is what I did. 10,000 miles later it has paid for itself.
