I really enjoyed S1 and could watch its cinematography every day. It was gorgeously shot.
For those that haven't seen S1 I recommend it and it is on MAX.
Wiki rundown
The story is loosely based on a real reporter of the same name and the book he wrote about his experience.

Hell yeah.....gotta do a lil rewatch

Yeah, I saw that was coming up and I'm looking forward to it also. The 1st season was pretty stylish and well done and ended with a bit of a cliffhanger. Hopefully season 2 follows suit.

Enjoyed season 1 but definitely need a rewatch, I don’t remember what the hell is going on. Was pretty amazed at Ansel Elgort’s handle of the Japanese language. Think I read he studied for like 9 hours a day for a year in prep

I'm definitely going to need a rewatch before next Thursday.
I wonder if Michael Mann is helping at all with season 2.

Yeah, I do to. It doesn't help that it has been almost two years since the first season.
As for Michael Mann he seems to still be connected:

Ansel Elgort is back on the beat: Toyko Vice, which is loosely inspired by American journalist Jake Adelstein’s first-hand account of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police beat, will return February 8 to Max.
The ten-episode second season debuts with two episodes followed by one new episode weekly for eight weeks.
Created and written by Tony Award winner J.T. Rogers, Tokyo Vice filmed season 2 on location in the capital of Japan. Adelstein (Ansel Elgort) comes to realize that his life, and the lives of those close to him, are in terrible danger.
The series also stars Ken Watanabe, Rinko Kikuchi, Rachel Keller, Show Kasamatsu, Ayumi Ito, and new series regulars Yosuke Kubozuka and Miki Maya.
J.T. Rogers and Alan Poul are executive producers alongside Alex Boden, Josef Kubota Wladyka, Brad Caleb Kane, Adam Stein, Elgort, Watanabe, Emily Gerson Saines, Jake Adelstein, Kayo Washio, Destin Daniel Cretton, John Lesher, and Michael Mann.
The drama is from Fifth Season and Wowow, Japan’s premium pay TV broadcaster. Fifth Season handles global distribution for the series outside of Max owned and operated platforms.
I lost the page for the link, too lazy to find it again, it was on Deadline.com

I was curious about this when I saw it pop up on Max. So it sounds like the first season at least is worth a watch?

I liked this show until they made the whore the focal point. A shite character with a shite attitude & storyline.
You have Ken Watanabe, arguably Japan's GOAT, several other likable characters, & this bitch keeps popping up.
She's not a bad actress, but her character is.

Really thought it would have been more popular on this board. If I remember correctly only a few of us were discussing season 1 when it was airing on HBO.

Love Watanabe’s red Fairlady Z in the show.

After seeing your OP, I watched Sydney Pollack's The Yakuza (1974) on Prime for $1.99.
Features Robert Mitchum, Ken Takakura, Brian Keith, Richard Jordan, Keiko Kishi, Eiji Okada, James Shigeta.

Just started E1 but it has my interest again.
I didn't have time for a rewatch of S1 but going to remedy that this week. Stoked. From the very first scene it is clear colors will be a big part of the cinematography again. Red, blue and green right off the bat.
