Rightly or wrongly, he may have assumed you were a disability claim waiting to happen. Depending on company policy, there might be limited options for backfilling the position, seeing as they would have to place someone coming off of disability.

Sorry about the sciatica. That is some serious pain.

Bruh that’s not sciatica, that’s an on the job injury which occurred before you were fired.

Sounds like you have a solid workman’s comp and wrongful termination case.. Perhaps a discrimination claim as well since you are a veteran.

Quit licking your wounds and get paid.

What % disabled are you? That should give you a nice bump in your retirement.

I would have saved you the gas money and told you over the phone not to come back

Your statement makes it look like you got away with doing nothing in the military and you expected civilian life to be the same. Maybe you should fine a cushy government job so you don't have to meet expectations

Bad timing on being out. Its best long term because your boss would always be watching to see if you took more time or left early (if on salary). You’ll bounce back, with Mil retirement you at least have income.

Best advice in future (for anyone coming out of Mil). Do not talk about it at new job. Don’t say “thats how we did it in the Navy/Army/whatever. Don’t tell sea stories either. Basically, pretend you were never in the service while at work.

Coworkers do not want to hear about your old service buddies or stories. Because its telling them you are living in the past and they want you to move the company forward. And it also tells them your old buddies are more important than them.

You need to start with clean slate. If anyone asks you about service just say that part of your life is over and you are happy to be in a new career. In time (years) then you will have established credibility and can talk some about your past.

They are hiring you for the skills you learned, and leadership - but expect you to move forward in your new job and it needs to be all about that. Brag how great the work culture is (don’t compare to service just praise leadership).

The tough baws are brutal to this man in this thread. Complain about crawfish prices, weather, and tranny hysteria on the OT but shut up about the difficulties of a post military transition.

This is really good advice.

But...

Every now and then, get drunk with your coworkers and make a really dark, cryptic comment. Then move on like you never said it. Keeps em on their toes.

Yep. Better said than my comment earlier, but yes, sounds just like that.

You didn’t change your socks and hydrate. It’s your own fault.

Sorry to hear that and thank you for your service man.

Be bold - post a brief listing of any skills and education you've picked up. Hopefully someone on here might be in a position to give you a shot.

Really? I guess I don't know any successful people then. I'm not talking about things like corporate layoffs (you may be including that). I'm talking about actually being fired.

My natural inclination is to believe the opposite. Like, if a guy got fired for insubordination or smoking dope, I would assume that doesn't really say anything about how good he is. I would try to figure out how good he is, and then decide if I could deal with a pot-smoker or a hothead in the job I was hiring for.

If a guy gets let go because of some mass layoff, I'd just figure he was a low performer who wasn't really important to the company. He held on for a while by not breaking any rules, but he never did much to make himself indispensable or even stand out. That's the sort of person I've seen let go in those mass layoff events
