Finally watched Barbie....am I missing something?

I thought it was awful. Like a legit terrible, unentertaining movie.
I realize I am not the target demo for it, but still...it was so popular and made so much money that I figured there had to be something about it that was redeeming (outside of Margot Robbie looking pretty). I even like Ryan Gosling most of the time. But it completely missed the mark for me in almost every measurable way.
Was this just purely nostalgia for the 25-50 year old women demo? I know nostalgia is a popular genre of sorts these days, but to the tune of $1.5 billion at the box office?
Outside of maybe some of the set pieces, everything about it was bad. The acting was bad (Will Ferrell and Kate McKinnon were the low points). The songs were bad. The plotline was bad. It was far too long (almost two hours). Etc. I don't think I cracked a smile once. And the whole thing just felt so overly forced and stupid, but not in an ironic or fun way.
What am I missing as to why this movie was so popular? Or is it as simple as "woman nostalgia"?

Haven't seen it, but I was flying back from DC last week and a lady in front of me had it on. She lasted about 10 minutes then turned it to something else. Made me wonder how bad it must be to last 10 minutes on a flight.

I had the want to see what the fuss was about, but could not make it past the first 10 minutes. Was definitely not made for me

This. I watched most of it on a flight last month and was astounded at how completely devoid of comedy it was.

In your new America, no film critic will dare criticize a movie made by & about women & people of “color”. They would be blackballed & out of a job in no time.

I watched this with my wife a few weeks ago and she “loved it” and even teared up near the end, if that answers your question.
I’m a big Ryan Gosling fan and he cracked me up a few times. That, plus staring at Robbie’s hindquarters throughout, made it a tolerable watch for me.

Women are followers. If it's popular to like something, they all do.

Maybe it is the equivalent of Skarknado being a thing. Just amplified because of the IP value not being destroyed.

I couldn't finish it, but I did laugh at one of Michael Cera's lines when they said he was happy about having to give all of the Ken's foot rubs

Watched half hour of it.
Frankly just got bored because I loathe commercials.. And that's what it looked and felt like...Even Robbie on screen couldn't save it.
There have been quite a few movies the past few years, massively hyped...Then you see it...And wonder...

people say "this movie wasn't meant for you (but please come see it so Bob Iger and Mickey don't kill us.)"
this was the most "this wasn't made for you" movie of all time. same as taylor swift concerts.

They did a really good job of marketing it, pairing it with oppenheimer etc. It was a totally average movie if that

I genuinely went into it with an open mind. Watched a few weeks ago. The last act of the movie was genuinely painful. Just wordy monologue after monologue. Perfect example of telling not showing
something I have learned but am unable to capitalize on. If you can get enough women to hype something then it will become an absolute cash cow. Stanley cups, Backstreet boys, ect

My wife couldn’t watch more than 5-10 minutes of it either.

if it were released in the 90s it probably would have been mostly forgotten as a dumb, silly movie.
but now everything has to be a culture war, so it either has to be the greatest or worst movie ever
Chick nostalgia also plays a part, wife got many of the references I had no clue about.
The Will Ferrell part was horrible, didn't even really get the point of it. Most of the "satire" in that movie felt pretty dated

quote:I personally did NOT care for the overall style/tone of the movie - and thought it wasn't even internally coherent. (e.g. in the "real" world, why did Ferrell and the board act so cartoonishly? It was completely out of phase with the other real world characters and aspects.

I do, however, think the movie was more overall subversive than it's been given credit for. I do not think it was purely "woke". Women came in for plenty of criticism too.
The "twist" was also mildly decent.
The only time I laughed in the whole thing was near the very beginning when her foot without the shoe was still the same shape.
