set your status to "looking" there, you should have recruiters contacting you.

That seems like a horrible idea, it being visible to your current employer. I realize they have visibility to you doing things like putting resumes on websites your company recruits on, but is showing your hand the best play?

I was thinking more along the lines of hiring someone to go out job shopping for me.

But when you hit Director or above, if you don’t think DEI is driving those hiring and promotion decisions despite the mountains of evidence where the companies are flat out telling us they’re doing this, I honestly don’t know what to say.

That may be the case in many large companies. However, I know it is not the case in mine. It also is not the case in almost all the smaller businesses out there and they hire tons of CPA to be Accounting Managers, Controllers, and every level of accountant you'd possibly be.

1) Have you updated your resume and
reached out to any Head Hunters?

2) Have you started looking at monthly expenses you can start tightening up a bit to save a couple hundred extra a week?

Your "busy season" is 50 hours a week sitting behind a desk. Is that your biggest complaint?

Does your job provide the healthcare for you and your wife? If so, price an individual plan that covers you both. You might just keep that job while looking when you get that sticker shock.

Sorry OP went to school and got specialized skills that allowed him to have a job that doesn't put as much stress on his body in to his 40s and 50s.

if he was so skilled, he'd be able to get another job within a week or two and this wouldn't be a problem

many, but not all, white collar baws really overrate their "skills" and value to society

The short answer is NO. The best time to look for a 'new' job is when you have one.
It comes under the assumption that you are responsible for the well-being of your family.
Start looking and tough it out until you find something.

No

I have plenty enough money saved up to survive til that next job comes, and work in an industry where it is likely not hard to find that job, but it's just not something I could do.

My last job got pretty rough. Small company, was struggling a bit, folks started leaving and not getting replaced so work was dumped on me in droves. I knew I had to get out, and as much as I hated it, I just couldn't do it.

I did quit before I got an official job offer, but I had 3 jobs lined up of which I knew with 99.999% certainty 2 offers were coming, so I bailed, got a nice 6 weeks off before starting the next job.

Working 50 hours per week during busy season is making it very hard to look for other jobs and go on interviews. Some potential employers are flexible about interview times, and others aren’t.

Should I just quit and start spending all my time looking for another job, or should I stick it out and try to find another job while working the 50 hours a week?
I wouldn't quit, but at some point, you gotta nicely tell your current job to frick off, you're taking that time off you need whether they like it or not( to go on those interviews)

Call in sick if you have to.

Hope you’re right. I’m considering a career selling insurance and investments with Northwestern Mutual

How’s your golf game? Apparently insurance bros play a lot of golf.

I quit one job while trying to line up another once. Went unemployed for 7 months and ended up in a more miserable and stressful situation.

I know that doesn’t help but I also wasn’t trying to

Dude you guys are rock stars I’m pretty sure you can get a job - perhaps even a remote job. I’d take a few “sick days” and apply to as many as you can to get the ball rolling

I was miserable in a sales job. Had a wife, a mortgage and a one year old. Just up and quit. Worked odd jobs for a couple years and went thru operations schooling. Got a job at a plant, made more money and was much happier

Friend, it’s busy season. They aren’t firing you. Settle down for a minute. Slack off tomorrow, take the weekend. If you feel used and under appreciated, you are probably right, there’s never been a better time to return the favor.

Please consider taking my previous advice a few pages ago over selling for NW mutual. Your network likely doesn’t need many of their products yet, and you will be cold calling. Your a damn CPA, there are tons of avenues you haven’t explored. If you are going to cold call, do it for something you already know how to do.

I’m a guy with too many licenses and degrees as well. I thought I hated my field and would never be fulfilled, and though sometimes I was right, I blamed my employers and circumstances for feeling unfulfilled. Ultimately I knew a W2 wasn’t going to get me where I wanted to be. When you get your mind right, go out on your own and never look back.

If that sounds too scary and live in SELA, call Carrie Lewis at Robert Half, Jennifer Cedro at Professional Recruiting, or Jim Schneider at personnel consulting. They will help you get interviews that fit your schedule, and don’t be afraid to have a dental procedure you have been putting off to make yourself available. Or call any firm in your area for a fresh start
