McElory: Kiffin and Ryans not options

Ben Flanagan
@ThisBenFlanagan
Greg McElroy emphatic on WJOX this morning: “Kiffin ain’t an option…He’s out.”
He also suggested there is bad blood between DeMeco Ryans and Alabama over the treatment of former defensive coordinator and interim head coach Joe Kines.
He says Kiffin burned some bridges at UA.

Why would DeMeco leave a great job with a team on the upswing with a great young core and franchise QB for the pressure cooker of being Saban's successor
I could see him going there down the road if circumstances are right

McElroy I don’t think has any idea what he’s talking about
He’s just using deductive reasoning like the rest of us

Kiffin is the easy choice but they are probably going to be dumb and hire someone like Lanning which will be a major setback for Bama

He had to have. There is no way in hell Saban made him leave a week before the national championship game unless he did something pretty egregious. Having Sark on staff to pick up the play calling probably made it easier for him to make the decision, but Kiffin did something to get some people very angry.

This has to be the case. Him not calling plays in the NC game was very, very odd.

I agree that Lanning isn't quite ready for the Bama job right now.

How’d they treat Joe Kines 20 years ago?

Honestly i wouldn’t be shocked if McElroy had friends who knew stuff at Alabama of all places.

Kiffin to me is the clear option. He would 100% have them 10-2 at worst and in the playoffs every year. Hell, he is doing that at ole miss

I think he was talking to Orgeron about jumping to LSU for the OC position. Saban made some calls and got him the head job in Boca and then wanted him out the door.

That’s two coaches to already turn down Bama. Who is keeping track?

What about Booger, Ryan Clark, Jacob Hester, T-Bob, etc? You don’t see then bloviating about LSU coaching rumors. Having played somewhere doesn’t give you inside access to the AD’s office in perpetuity. And I think working in the media would make them more tight lipped around you because they don’t want that shite leaked out

That was all Saban’s ego making Kiffin leave before the championship game. Saban thought he didn’t need him. Funny thing is that Saban cost himself another national championship with that decision. Now he’s tied with Bear for championships at Bama. He could have been the all time leader except for his ego.

It’ll be whoever Saban recommends

Just guessing. I think Lanning deal already done.

This isn't going to be an easy job to fill. Any coach that takes it will be walking into the highest expectations perhaps in the history of college football. And gone are the days where only a few really invested schools will pay big salaries. Coaches can make a ton of money coaching at even mid-tier power conf. schools.
If you are Lanning at Oregon you are in a good program that would have made a 12 playoff this year. You also have possibly the most lucrative booster in sports (Phil Knight/Nike) at your doorsteps. And Eugene is a nice (relatively) quiet town in a pretty part of the country. Why would you leave to come face the grind of the SEC for a place where 10-2 is going to be seen as a "failure"?
Kiffin has the ego to walk into the job, but the timing may not be right with Ole Miss set to be a contender next year. Plus, does he really want the job?
Alabama is an historically great program. They will invest in football at the highest level. Clearly a good coach can win there. But I think many guys who are in high demand are going to look at their current situation and think taking the Alabama job provides them with a lower quality of life than what they have now.

Doesn't have a clue. Even mentioning Ryans is stupid.
