So in your opinion playing in the national championship game is the worst day in LSU football history?

You could tell early on that Alabama had adjusted their approach from the earlier meeting in November and LSU didn't. It was like watching a slow death. You knew Les was not going to deviate from his approach...even though it clearly wasn't working...and you were just hoping the defense could hang on long enough to allow some sort of flukey offensive or specials teams play to make a difference.
we had already been in NOLA for days as we went to watch the saints-lions playoff game. that game was great. LSU-bama not so much.
it was chinese water torture. a slow tortuous death. watching any chance slowly dwindle away was painful and infuriating.
when it got to 12-0 i had bama fans ask me WTF is miles doing? why did n't he pull JJ and try Lee? i said because of stupidity.
once it got to 15-0 i knew game was over. we were heading towards the exits as trent richardson scored the lone TD of the game to finish us off at 21-0. watching miles refuse to go hurry up no huddle was unforgivable. he made JJ hand off and punted on 4th. he quit.
he did not go down swinging. you hurry up and throw non stop. seeing someone wave the white flag in a game like that against our biggest rival was a fireable and unforgivable offense.

I still think OSU made that FGA vs. Iowa St.
The fix was in for Alabama, even back then.

27 rushes for 39 yards total
Jefferson rushed 14 times for 15 yards
Rest of the team 13 rushes for 24 yards
Jefferson was 11 for 17 passing
92 yards of total offense
Les did as Les does but the lack of any offense makes me wonder if Tricky Nicky may have pulled a Michigan magician slight of hand.
just sayin'

Was a very painful day and just went back to the hotel with everyone and sat.
That said, we were playing for a National Championship, so not sure it was our worst day.

I remember giving up on them at the start of the 3rd quarter when I saw Jefferson was still the QB. I knew there wasn’t going to be any change in the second half. Then after the game the stories about how stubborn Les was about the QB situation, and benching guys over it, I was done with him as a HC.

Why continue to pick open the scab? Leave it alone.

I remember being pissed the BCS made us play Bama twice in one year. I remember not crossing the 50 yard line. I remember being thankful I didn’t spend $500 on a ticket to watch that garbage.

Right before Trent Richardson scored the lone td of the game in the 4th quarter, you could see Eric Reid throwing up through his face mask on the field from the safety position. Just a brutal day.

I hated what happened that day, but a day when you played for a national championship is NOT the worst day in your history.
You must not have been in Tiger Stadium that time when Spurrier beat us 58-3.

I kept waiting for a big defensive play that never came the whole first quarter. McCarron played really well from the start. We were in trouble.

It was a night where the stubbornness of Les Miles was on full display. He flat out refused to do anything different while watching the great season and championship slip away.
I honestly wonder if OU fans think of Stoops and the 03 game this way.
Was Stoops “stubborn”, and just refused to do anything different?
Or did OU run into one of the greatest defenses of all time and get beat by the better team?
Same for Tressel and OSU in 06 or 07? Terrible coaching that blew a sure championship, or the better team did what it was supposed to do?
Two Heisman winning QBs and electric offenses completely shut down, but Les couldn’t crack Saban’s historic defense with JJ and Lee, so stubborn

There was something about that 2011 team that just relaxed me. I don't know what it was, but I never worried that they would lose. Even during the first game, I wasn't worried. I knew that if Bama beat us that night, they had to be the best team of all time, because that's how good LSU was and that's what it would take to beat them.
Then Marquise Maze ran that got 49 yards on the first punt return. All of the game-time anxiety that I had missed the whole season came back at once. For context, LSU had given up 7 yards of punt returns TOTAL all season. For that team to give up that punt return told me something was up. I didn't know what it was, but I knew it was something.
Then, Jefferson missed seeing DeAgnelo Peterson running wide open early in the third quarter. Instead, he threw the same pass he had thrown the previous down to Odell Beckham, Jr. Yes, this time he completed it for the biggest play of the game (19 yards), but it was also the biggest missed opportunity. A TD there would have made the game 12-7, and for a team that thrived on opportunity, scoring the first TD in 7 quarters against that team would have been big for their morale. It wasn't to be.
Most of the national media slobber over that Bama defense, and they really were one of the best ever. However, I will always believe that LSU defense was even better. LSU's defense had to do two things Bama didn't:
1. Play a top-40 offense (LSU had played two: Oregon and West Virginia).
2. Get Jordan Jefferson to the national championship game.
2019 helped heal this a lot.

quote:Parrot talk. Jefferson threw a 20+ completion to near Bama red zone. Next play IIRC, an OL penalty, then a sack took LSU out of FG range. The OL was awful that day.
