Needless to say he messaged me last night. Said it's finally happened and he has been worried about this for awhile. Said if the general public saw what he sees half of America wouldn't get on an airplane.
I'm sure this wise friend of yours does all manner of risky shite without thinking twice.

Alaska is a good airline, this will get figured out quickly.
Also, United has more of these Max 9s in their fleet than Alaska.

I wonder if United has more 9s with the emergency door or with plug configurations.
quote:
On the 737-9 MAX, Boeing includes a rear cabin exit door aft of the wings, but before the rear exit door. This is activated in dense seating configurations to meet evacuation requirements. The doors are not activated on Alaska Airlines aircraft and are permanently “plugged.” The door position in question is highlighted below inside the red circle.

Why don’t you go check out the ages of Boeing’s executive board. Every singe person is Gen X. Yet you find way to blame younger people.

There is so much terrible information in this thread it's hilarious.
Plane is a Boeing 737 MAX-9
The door is a plugged emergency exit door that is not in use on most configurations and only used on high density aircraft
The FAA has grounded all 737 MAX-9s until inspections have been completed.
Alaska and United, the only two US operators of the 737 MAX-9 have completed inspections on some aircraft and they have returned to regular service.
This is the same plug door that has been flying on the 737-900 for years with no issues.

With all due respect I'm going to trust my best friend far more over the opinion of an internet message board poster. I never said he doesn't fly, he does. But he's in the industry every day and there are definitely things he sees that concern him and other posters have also mentioned some of these same concerns.
Yes flying is still safer than driving but at the end of the day there are still two advantages to driving. Driving you are in control whereas flying you are completely out of control. Driving even if you're in a wreck you can survive it. If your plane goes down there's a very good chance you won't survive it. Hence what is supposed to be the higher standards. A plane crash is far more devastating than a car crash. Alaska Airlines was lucky no one was in that seat. If someone had been in that seat they would not be alive today.
Again I'll trust the opinion of my friend over some random person I've never met.

You’re an internet message board poster. I trust TD more than the best friend of a message board poster. TD at least has actual pilots posting.

Because they didn’t have their tray table in the upright position. Duh

They'd be dead? The seat is still bolted inside the plane. Am I missing something?

The entire seat cover is gone.
At 16,000ft, you're getting sucked out if you're in that seat. I haven't been able to confirm it yet, but the rumor is the two people that should have been in those seats missed their connection which is why they went out unoccupied.

Eh, if you're buckled in you'd more than likely make it.

Still statistically much safer to fly. His thought process completely ignores all the poor drivers and poorly maintained vehicles that grace our highways and byways every day.

Well the seat is obviously still there and the seatbelts are obviously still attached. Stay buckled in and you'll likely not get sucked out. There's pictures in this thread of the Hawaiian Air flight that lost its roof and everyone made stayed in their seats. Only the flight attendant who obviously wasn't buckled in or even seated got sucked out of the plane. Take your argument up with physics, not me.

Maybe she wasn't wearing her seatbelt. Either way, it's not an automatic death sentence. I think you survive that 9 times out of ten.

What makes you think this? Sure the seat cover is gone as it’s not securely strapped in, a human with a seat belt would have been. Are we sure this went absolutely quickly or was there possibly some small signs it was happening that a human would have known to make sure they were buckled?
Either way, incredibly lucky for Alaskan there was no one there and we don’t have to find out.

The NTSB has done a full report and she was.
Not sure why you're on here trolling but nobody would give either scenario a 90% survival rate if sitting in a failing window.

Doors don't blow out slowly.
It is being widely reported that the seat next to the window was unoccupied. This flight likely would have had a fatality otherwise.
