What is a good pellet rifle to buy to shoot coons and squirrels with around the house and camp?

RWS Model 34
The German Made Break Barrel Air Rifle made to hand down from Generation to Generation.
Can hit soup can consistently at 50 yards. Very accurate.

I'll tag along with this thread. I need a decent scope for my Gamo. I think its called a Wildcat whisper

The PCP rifles are where it’s at. That RWS is almost as loud a 22 rimfire. My brother has one. Kinda defeats the purpose.
Guess it depends on what you’re willing to spend. The PCP rifles are expensive, but mine is the most accurate gun I have to about 50-60 yards.

Funny you start this thread. I recently stumbled upon my pellet gun my uncle handed down to me. It is a late 70's early 80's Sheridan .20 caliber pellet gun. Anyone know were I can bring it to change the seals?

Marlin or similar bolt action with tube fed magazine.
CCI Subsonic shorts
Quieter than my break barrel pellet rifle and much more accurate/consistent.

Nah bruh. Subsonic 22 ammo is generally pretty crappy and inconsistent. Most of the top notch air rifles are much more accurate than any 22 subs. Air rifles are serious business now.

I was waiting for this. I'll never understand why this happens.

Its just a safety switch, at least a poor effort at one. It just gets in the way of the actual trigger. It slides forward out of the way when you are ready to shoot.

You can shoot animals with any pellet gun.
If you want a good one that actually can kill a squirrel and even coons and armadillos (and small hogs in the ear hole) you will want a PCP. That stands for precharged pneumatic. You’ll also want to skip past the 22 caliber variants and instead opt for a 25 caliber. Expect the air compressor to cost as much or more than the gun itself.
Benjamin Marauder is popular, but I ended up with an Air Venturi Avenger in 25 cal. I shoot the heaviest pellets I can find at about 34 grains and it propels them to about 850fps (yes, I checked using a chronograph). You get about 50 ft-lbs of energy which is slightly less than a regular 40gr subsonic 22LR round.
22 caliber air rifles especially the kind you pump like the old Benjamins or break action like the old RWS 34 are junk compared to a PCP when it comes to ethically killing squirrels and coon sized animals with a single shot.

Great for target practice. I had one for many years and wounded a boatload of squirrels before I gave up and got an air rifle that can reliably and ethically kill small game.

Not sure I agree you need the highest caliber you can find. I have 2 marauders one .17 and one .22. I have dropped many a squirrel from a good 50-60 feet cold with the .17 and the .22 kills anything dead before it even hits the ground. If you are just shooting in your yard, its plenty of power provided you have your tank charged.

The OP specifically asked about shooting coons. You better shoot the coon in the eyeball with that .177 and in the brain with that .22. With my .25 I can shoot them in the vitals and get an exit wound.
To me there’s absolutely no sense getting a .22 cal PCP when you can get a .25 cal PCP for the same price with twice the power.
To each his own.

I killed everything under the sun 40lbs and below with a .20 cal Sheridan pellet rifle between 1989 and 1994.

You must be an incredibly shitty shot. I killed boatloads of squirrels with an old Gamo crackbarrel as a kid. That thing might have made 700 fps.
Getting a PCP is cool and all but it's hardly necessary for small game hunting, even coons.

The Hatsan 135 QE Vortex Air Rifle, .30 Caliber break barrel is highly accurate with phenomenal power for medium size game hunting with 30 ft/lbs of muzzle energy. It still has approx. 23 ft/lbs at 50 yards making it very effective at this long range probably more effective than smaller bore guns. It is heavy and hard to cock (the price to pay for such high power in a break barrel). It is definitely not for smaller, weaker shooters.
