re: New York City mayor sues Texas bus companies for transporting “migrants” to NYC

Disputes between states (assuming a municipality in another state falls into that designation) are a federal matter, sunshine.
Adams is framing the actual dispute as with the bus companies. NYC is mandating what times and what locations the buses can drop off. That pretty much keeps it a local matter, not federal, and although his rhetoric is directed toward Abbott, from a legal standpoint, he's acting toward bus drivers operating in his city.

He can try this but the busses can game him.
They can just pull up into any transit authority facility outside NYC proper and provide these assholes with a bunch of subway tokens then say “Take the red line to Times Square at 42nd St.”
They may have laws on the books he can use against them but they can easily change their tactics to counter him and he can’t change laws fast enough to re-counter.

It sure was a short leap from "No human is illegal, hey hey hear hear, immigrants are welcome here" over to "We're suing the bus companies that drove them here"

Adams may run afoul of some ICC laws.

I'm not lawyer, but wouldn't it make more sense to sue Texas? Or better yet, sue the federal government for allowing uncontrolled immigration.

NYC cares naught for the laws of other lands.
Hence why Bloomberg et all would be regularly trying to sue Virginia and elsewhere claiming they were the reason that NYC had a gun problem.

Suing another state goes immediately to federal court.
Suing the federal government goes immediately to federal court.
And the federal government has no damn intentions of letting the immigration train stop.

My guess is these bus companies are common carriers.

Over what? A bus load of taco benders that request NYC as their destination of choice?
You are overlooking the fact that these “migrants” choose where they want to go.
I think these are all Yankees Fans and want to be there on opening day. They tell Border Control which city they want a ride to.
No one is loading a bus, someone steps in and shouts “ You are all going to Chicago. “

They need to hire Cheech to teach the Other Than Mexicans how to blend in when they arrive.

Ever notice that virtually any time leadership in a former sanctuary city opens their trap, they make the case against themselves?
"they're sending them unanounced"
"we can't care for them"
"we dont have room"
"stop using them as a political pawn"
We agree with everything they say. Call Sleepy Joe and tell him to turn off the flow. Good talk.

New York City has and will always do our part to manage this humanitarian crisis, but we cannot bear the costs of reckless political ploys from the state of Texas alone
Interesting, so a town like Brownsville must bear the entire brunt because a sanctuary city like NYC wants to be that in name only.

TX should stop paying charter companies and pack them into state owned school buses moving forward.
Posted on 1/4/24 at 3:11 pm to EKG
Should be sending them the other way.
What a failure from republicans.

Texas is federally enjoined from deporting these people.
Sending them to be a liberal area’s problem instead? Legal.

If they need space, I hear they have giant tents they can set up in Central Park. You know, the ones for all the covid bodies?

That is intended as a hunting preserve for youths of indeterminate origin to catch their limit of joggers.

The lawsuit argues that the companies have violated New York state law by not paying for the cost of caring for migrants
How does this law jive with sanctuary city status? Wouldn't that be selective prosecution? Apply laws to businesses but not the actual individuals responsible?

It cites New York law that requires anyone who brings a "needy person" from out of state for the purposes of making them a public charge to either take them out of the state or support them.
This sounds like a law written in 1834

I'm surprised Abbott hasn't been hit with kidnapping charges or some type of false imprisonment claims. Does he get waivers from these people to transport them? I thought they would lawfare Ron to death over the Martha's Vineyard stunt.
