Folks on here are so scattered geographically…but I’ll ask. Anyone recommend a good trainer? Aside from what i mentioned on my initial post, I want my Viszla, Reese, to stay on my side when I’m coaching. I bring her to the pool now, and she’s okay, but can’t sit still (completely understandable) when others are around. If it’s just me on the deck and kids in the pool, she follows me up and down. Ideal.

I’m very active, and this allows for free physical activity for her if this can be done.

have to be careful with a viszla
No harsh training or shock collars or any of that shite. they are super sensitive

very similar to bloodhounds…hard headed but sensitive

Exactly. Dogs behave in the manner their owners allow.

It’s more to train you on how to teach a dog than making the dog be 100% obedient

Depends on the dog. All but one of mine trained easily without obedience training. One was kind of stubborn so I did take him. He liked the other dogs and the treats he earned. He learned some things more reliably than others.

Precision K9 Shaping- Gaston is awesome. It’s not cheap but well worth the money.

Early 90s at LSU, there were ads all over Baton Rouge for "Dick Russell's Dog Training". Billboards, TV, radio, everywhere. So much so that we, some dumb arse college kids, knew who Dick Russell was.

Anyway, a buddy wound up with a dog and he didn't know shite about training it so we decided to frick with him and taught the dog to sit when you told it "Dick Russell".

It took a while but once it got good enough we let him know we had taught Sam how to sit and he was happy with us until he realized he had to tell his dog "Dick Russell" when he wanted it to sit.

I would have been worth it for me if I'd sent my wife in for training at the same time. If everybody in the household isn't on board with it then it's not going to stick without a lot of constant effort.

we got our first puppy last year and we had no idea what we were doing. We sent her to All Dogs Unleashed two-week program, and it was as if they gave us a different dog. The whole experience was great and they even offer lifetime free Maintenace refreshers. you just have to pay for the trainer's mileage. I think they said it was a dollar a mile. They will come to your house, or you can meet them at parks and retail shops to train more in the public. If you ever have to board your dog for 3 days or more you can even pay 25 extra dollars a night for full refreshers during boarding. We did that before the holidays to get her ready for the increased foot traffic in the house and was well worth it.

i have never personally had a dog that has gone through obedience school........however, there are lots of elderly ladies\couples that walk through my neighborhood with small and medium sized dogs who have obviously been to those schools. its pretty impressive to watch a dog, when introduced to a moment where most dogs would go nuts, quietly sit and chill while the chaos ensues around them, at a simple command.

It’ll be more worth it if you’re involved with the training. The dog is very easy to train. The human (specifically proper communication) is the difficult part.

For example, if I were to teach your dog to heel and then hand it over to you, the dog would very quickly pick up on what you might let it get away with and start pushing those boundaries.

We used K9Nation LA in Stonewall. We did a month long stay for $1850. Steve is amazing as our dog was very stubborn. She is an Australian Cattle mixed breed. But we still have to work with her everyday. One thing is, they can't train the puppy out of her. Important to not use shock too often. We do the vibe feature a lot but only shock for a serious violation. Was worth every penny.

I know my neighbor said he spent over 3 grand to get one of his to stop being mean to the other dogs. But the same dog sits in the back yard barking at air molecules and grass growing far as I can tell. Drives us crazy. He's lucky he has cameras!
