Stupid waste of time question: do you say Merry Christmas after Christmas has passed?

I swear I’ve never had anyone tell me Merry Christmas after Christmas Day has passed before. This year I’ve had like 10 people tell me Merry Christmas in the last couple of days. And I’m just thinking “thanks, but like that already happened.” And I’m already set on New Years. Feels like I’m in a time loop.

Yes, it is a stupid question, and no, you didn't have to ask it.

That’s my go to before Christmas. Usually Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays depending on the audience. And then I transform to just Happy New Years after Christmas

I think you people prefer 'transition'...

Christmastide lasts until epiphany (Jan 6). Today is the third day of Christmas.

I hate it when people tell me Happy New Year weeks after Jan 1...just because it is the first time they have seen me since the holiday.

Liturgically speaking “Merry Christmas” is correctly celebrated until Epiphany. So if you’re a Christian it could be assumed that you celebrate Christmas during the octave of Christmas.

If I ran into my neighbor, who I did not see right before Christmas, hell yeah I'm yelling Merry Christmas!

I guarantee you tell people Happy New Year a few days after the New Year. Why the hate for Christmas a few days after? A few days after Christmas is fine. Even though the Epiphany is after the New Year, I usually just say Happy New Year after January first with no real rationale.

It's technically Christmas from the 25th until Jan 6th(Epiphany)

I’ve always said “have a happy new year” from the 26th thru the 30th.
From the 30th through the week of Jan 1, I say “Happy New Year!”

Now that I type it out - it does seem odd to me that my salutation gets less personal once we reach the actual new year.
