It sorta depends on what you have … is it a few numismatics, a curated collection, a mixture of constitutional silver with other?

For example, … an extensive collection of colonial coins, or mis-strikes, or shipwreck silver/gold, etc

I’ve used Heritage on several occasions … they’ve got a division that focuses on private collections and rare/ancient coins and they have periodic auctions …. You can read more about them here:

Sure, they take their percentage, but they reach a wide swath of Buyers ….. which means you usually get a reasonable sell price.

If you are only looking to sell only a few pieces, I would recommend some of the online dealers that publish their buy-back rates online. Provident Metals in Dallas is one I’ve used, APMEX is good too.
They may not have a published rate for your particular coin, but the fact that they publish rates online at all is reputable.

If you have one of the big coin shows being held near where you live, like the annual Money Show, you can meet with the Buyers from the big online houses …. they are usually knowledgeable and a good future contact to have.

I sold 50, 25 2.5 and 5 dollar gold pieces, Carson City silver dollars, proof sets all kinds of things my folks had. You have to find someone willing to pay for it to have value, if it was used in jewelry or not in perfect shape it will likely be melt prices. We used a guy in Lafayette, felt like a fair deal. Think the name was Bryant Gemstones. We ended up with about 25k from the sale.

I recently inherited a LOT of old coins, about 20 gold coins, 170x old 100 bills, 30x old 50’s, and a crap load more of 20’s, 5’s and 2 dollar bills. Oh a lot of old confederate bills and silver certificate 1’s.

I know some of the coins have some value but it’s just to much to sort through.

We inherited some containers of coins. Nothing special. Just a big assortment of junk silver coins, wheat pennies, war nickels, a few foreign coins (some silver), etc.

I reached out to the president of the local coin club, and he directed me to a local shop that he said would be interested in such coins and would give a fair price. They went through them, told us what each type of coin was worth (which was consistent with the little research I had done), and paid us on the spot. We were very happy with the whole transaction.

Agora Auctions does a great job. I’ve bought coins from them many times. I’ve never sold, so I’m not sure what that side of the operation is like, but I’ve had zero issues buying off their auction app.

In fact I look forward to them.
