Bad coordinators are over rated.. Good coordinators are not.
The difference is a GOOD coordinator can elevate the level of play with his adjustability, scheme, and overall coaching
A BAD coordinator doesn’t know what to do when he doesn’t have top talent to work with. And you get players that look absolutely lost on every play

So Kelly gets the blame for the defense?
In a way you are correct but you have a coach that can bring in top 5 classes consistently and also have a program humming like Kirby and Saban.

I recall several threads last year and a few early this year wishing Kelly would show him the door.

If you have the right HC and systems in place, you can lose your coordinators and continue to attract high level talent to fill those positions.
Brady unleashed it all in 2019.
Of course you have to have the player talent, but coordinators matter bigly.

I'm not saying LSU doesn't need a new DC but the talent level on defense is not up to LSU standards at this point.
Hopefully they improve next season but thinking they will be ready to compete by adding a new DC is only setting oneself up to be disappointed.
Take cornerback. People bitch about getting burned; go watch "highlights" of Duce Chestnut earlier this season. He did get an interception, and he was covering Keon Coleman (the Fla State guy). He was on him, but it wasn't "blanketing" him... more like a bath towel around his waist instead of a blanket .
He literally, physically could not do better. He understood the defense, but could not compete at this level.
Now take Toviano- he didn't replace Chestnut early, eventually (end of year) he did get on the field. He still made mistakes, but he also made plays.
He's just beginning to grasp the defense, but he can play at this level.
The problem for House was that he HAD to go with Chestnut, because nobody else was close.
Now, I can't tell you why he didn't dumb it down further... maybe he did, and that's why lots of teams moved at will. But seeing that he's got NFL history, maybe his schemes demand a good bit of understanding, AND a good bit of raw physical talent (like you'd see in the NFL, - and like you'd expect to see at a school like LSU once you have your recruits in place a couple seasons).
This year COULD have been the transitional period we all hear about, before Toviano etc are ready for next year.

Are you kidding, do you think Orgeron’s 2019 team would have been as good without the OC and passing game day coach
Posted on 12/23/23 at 11:20 am to tlsu15
Let’s not rationalize. This is a setback, which LSU will just have to deal with
Posted on 12/23/23 at 11:35 am to tlsu15
That’s a very bad take. Player ability is the main factor in a good offense but the play caller is responsible for putting those players in optimal situations

Are you a new fan, or just a short sighted one?
We went nearly a decade living or dying on the “get the best coordinators we can approach”
When we did, we contended. And when we didn’t, we belly flopped.
You really think the “systems” changes that much?

but when a team isn’t good, there are multiple reasons
I said defense. The offense was numero uno in all the nation. In fact the disparity between our offense and defense alone should highlight that coordinators matter. There is a spectrum. The team wasn’t bad. The defense was atrocious. “Team” insinuates that all three phases were a failure and that would be quite misleading don’t you think? Talent is not the only reason that a defense plays as poorly as ours did. Not one person is saying we should have the top D in the SEC. Middle of the pack may have put us in the playoffs for fricks sake.

Neither Saban or Kirby have ever hired Matt House to be their DC either. A coordinator is certainly helped by talent and position coaches, but can’t be a complete incompetent like House.

Dude Saban and Kirby Rarely make Bad hires , that’s why they have continued Success
OC and DC hires certainly do matter … Coaching , Recruiting , Scheming and Player Relations

dumbass shoeshine boy lester thinks that is a gotcha when it is accurate. the facts still stand. last year JD shoulda been rotated with nuss some or rode the pine some. we pointed out those bad games, all the sacks holding ball too long, the not throwing downfield, YPA, etc. he was NOTHING last year like he was this year.
thankfully he got it all fixed this year which was great.
kudos to SLOAN AND DENBROCK

Coordinators can suck but even a good coordinator isn’t fixing Carr and Dennis Allen.
