There are a lot of businesses where this pitch would have some merit. Mostly small/mid-sized, of course. Just because you don't own it doesn't really mean you can't have pride in it, mutually benefit from the success, etc. I think it's harder to find that but it does exist and it's certainly something to be celebrated/encouraged.
Correct.
I worked for a company with 100-150 employees. Christmas party was at the boss's house. I even met his dog.
Large corporations suck.

Losing at the track huh? America all stocked up on junk consumer-grade stuff? Apparently.

Twice a year profit sharing bonus for the employees will get this CEO what he wants.

This is what I have for my employees. They are amazed by it, and get why we need to go 200% during certain times of the year. They perform. I also give them discretionary bonuses throughout the year. The company is several years old and has had no turnover.
I give them other cool perks to feel like a million bucks, like taking their family including in laws to a fancy dinner.
My business consultant told me that no one treats their employees as well as we do. He asked me if it was because of religious reasons. I responded that it was because I worked for a couple companies who expected more and more, gave less and less, set me up for failure, and if I made a human error (most cases caused by the intense workload) I would be held accountable and fired. However, if I would perform and handle my responsibilities, there was no bonus or discretionary raises. I did not get a raise over 4 years.
Meanwhile upper management is getting all these bonuses. One of the companies did nothing to grow the company and the executives just milked what they had. It took me a few years to realize the grass is greener somewhere else.
And one thing I also learned. Most people in upper management got there because they are narcissistic sociopaths. They care nothing about those they screw over to get to the top, have no remorse, are not thoughtful, and live in their own reality. They have no feelings. I feel awful for their spouses, but most of them can't balance that anyway and are on their 3rd wife.

If my CEO said that I’d probably find another job, and when asked why I’m leaving, say the new company is more ambitious and is letting me work even longer hours.

As soon as associates my age become eligible for wfh they end up abusing it (typically). Doesn’t make sense or appeal to me.
No terrible commute time to waste an hour or more of your time each day.
Ability to work from anywhere.
Want to work a high paying job without moving your family to some HCOL hellhole like San Francisco or NYC but your small town or community has nothing available? Remote positions make it doable without having to compromise one or the other.
That's the appeal.

Right
That’s why I said appeal to me

He’s right. If all you want is a salary, go on punching the clock at 40. If you want to get well ahead get to work, snowflake. Presumably he didn’t become CEO by working 40s, so he’s not asking anything that he wasn’t willing to give.

Imagine thinking these companies are going to actually appropriately compensate employees who “give more”.

I’m still hung up on the fact this was his holiday message… calling his employees lazy.
That will absolutely encourage his employees to do more…
Isn’t Wayfair a bit of a cheap goods company?
You get what you pay for.

So…he’s talking to above 10-20% of his population and the other 80% are eye rolling or worse.
The other 80% are more than likely replaceable.

I always lament that I could have made it so much further up the ladder in my career if I was burdened with this damn thing called a conscience.

Although I think smaller or mid sized companies would lean towards treating their employees better, it definitely is a case by case.
I work for a company at around 100 employees, love working there and treated well.
As an example, during middle of Covid I negotiated an extra cost of living pay adjustment which I got. There was a guy in my office that was the same pay tier, they gave him the pay raise too saying it wouldn't be right to not give it to him too.
Keep in mind this was completely unasked for by the other guy. (He still has no idea he got it because I brought the subject up)
Meanwhile my wife who put 12 years into the company she works for that has 100 people, fired her for getting pregnant and giving birth to our son. They came up with a song and dance about the reasoning but they were really obvious about the true reason.
Companies tend to be scumbags who think loyalty is just a one way street.

Work smarter, not harder.
