Those Ironman and Swatch Watches were pretty popular when I was 13.

I gave my son an Omega Speedmaster for his 13th birthday. When he turns 18, I plan to give him the Rolex my grandfather gave me on my 18th birthday.

Casio Pro Trek Solar Titanium. Everything from an altimeter to temperature thermometer on it. Indestructible.

Cheetah watch. Classy and sleek but definitely in budget.

However, if he is wanting an apple watch, them there is no other watch out there he will be satisfied with and he will be disappointed. Sorry for the bad news.

My first “big boy” watch around his age was something similar to this in the mid 90s. Think it was around $100-125 back then

G-shock watches are very affordable and yet still very desirable and appreciated for “horology” folks

Do they still sell naked lady watches?

13 means he is hitting puberty and that will be most appreciated.

Keep in mind an Apple Watch and a "conventional" watch are two different things and buying one when the child wants the other is like buying them a cat when they wanted a dog.

IF he wants a conventional watch (since he can't have what he really wants) I normally would recommend a Casio 5600E G-Shock for digital or a Casio MDV106 "Marlin" for an analog watch but they are likely both way too big for his wrist, sizing is an issue with Apple watches also.

Casio has a smaller 36mm (even though they say it is 38mm) watch that is very similar to the Marlin the only issue is that it is new and nearly impossible to find in the US and it is likely too late to have it shipped in. The model is Casio MDV-10-1A1.

Size wise the Casio Baby-G is probably what you want in the G-Shock range BUT it says Baby-G right on the bezel... might be a poor choice for a boy.

If you find out he does want a regular watch then find out if he wants analog or digital and measure his wrist diameter. Post that information and your budget and you should get some more focused answers. I am all about getting new generations to appreciate watches but they have to have some level of interest in wearing one or it just becomes counter-productive.

Now if you have money to burn (ie plan to buy him a G-Wagon or 911 when he turns 16) and want to troll the school you can buy him this version of the H. Moser & Cie Alp Watch.

When they tell him to take it off he can just show them the back:

Believe me. Your 13 year old gives no shits about a watch. If you want something cool that he might wear maybe a swatch. Kids don't wear watches to tell time
