People are cutting back on tipping, frustrated by ubiquitous requests for gratuities.

As of November, service-sector workers in nonrestaurant leisure and hospitality jobs made $1.28 an hour in tips, on average, down 7% from the $1.38 an hour they made a year prior. The data is according to an analysis of 300,000 small and medium-size businesses by payroll provider Gusto.

The tipping slowdown is a gloomy development for all types of workers who rely on holiday tips as a chunk of their annual income. It reflects a broad frustration with the proliferation of tip requests at dry cleaners and bridal boutiques and even self-checkout machines that have sprung up since the pandemic.

Mary Medley, a Denver retiree who described herself to The Wall Street Journal in July as a unilaterally prolific tipper, is one of those who has become more discerning in recent months.

“It feels not as good to tip now that it’s popping up everywhere,” says Medley, 70 years old. “What started out to be a way to acknowledge excellent personal service feels like it’s become a way to help supplement worker compensation.”

Ask for a tip before you’ve done anything and you’ll get nothing

I’ve been to many stores that ask for a tip just for checking you out. Can you imagine if next the grocery checker wants a tip? That’s coming!

Good. When you expect a tip no matter what, the service generally reflects that. So the effort to do a good job isn’t there. Which makes people tip even less.

Also when you ask for a tip on literally any transaction people will just stop altogether. Wasn’t there a thread here a few weeks ago about someone checking out online and it was asking for a tip? frick all that nonsense.

When they flip that tablet over and say "Its just gonna ask you some questions," I stare them dead in the face and say "just click NO"

Looks like cheap business owners can’t pawn off their employees’ pay on customers

I’ve always tipped 20% at restaurants but did start tipping higher post Covid and would tip more frequently to people that I would’ve never considered tipping prior to Covid. It was hard to get people to show up to work because they were being paid to stay home.

However, they went too far and while I still tip my server well I’m no longer tipping for dumb things like checking me out at a register and the many other useless things that have pushed tipping

For me, it started when the concession stand workers at LSU games started asking for tips lmao. That’s when I realized we hit peak clown society.

I fricking HATE that fricking computer screen that flips around and puts you on the spot RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE PERSON THAT JUST TOOK YOUR COUNTER ORDER.

Good GOD....All they did was push some buttons on the cash register.

frickers want tips for everything. They are putting tip lines on receipts at all kinds of places now that shouldn’t have them. They are out of their damn minds.

Tipping makes sense for actual service. Not for checkout.

I was getting a biscuit in a local gas station the other day. The lady working behind the counter was coughing all over and starting saying "it's tippin Tuesday! its tippin Tuesday". I'll never go back to that gas station. The Popingos next door is better anyway

I hope you’ve enjoyed this interaction with me as i walked by you. Please tip here.

Just walk around the airport, see what i can get.

Ppl these days expect a tip for literally everything.

I’m glad tipping has gone down. Service pretty much everywhere you go is dogshit so it’s based on merit. You’re not entitled to any damn thing. Make sure to show great service and ppl will
Tip accordingly
