I know he's not the type but it would be wild if he did something stupid in year 10 that allowed the team to void the contract under a morals clause like Trevor Bauer. And I'm sure deferred money is treated differently but it's still funny to think about.

Based on this contract, I assume ohtani knew from day one he wanted to be a dodger and the entire free agency was simply working out the logistics of this deal.
I can't imagine any of the other teams had a legitimate shot at signing him.

He makes an incredible amount of money outside of his baseball contract, I seriously doubt he's making these decisions without the assistance of some reputable business minds. He can certainly afford them.
No one is arguing he’s going to end up poor taking deferred compensation

He was never going to get $700 mil without deferring, so I'm not seeing the advantage for the Dodgers or disadvantage for him.
This is purely speculation on your part. Prior to his signing, a lot of people were predicting a contract of this value bc he’s two elite players in one.

Ever consider that they worked inflation into the numbers of the contract?
It's not like he's making a couple bucks more than then next highest paid player, it's nearly double.

Hmmmmm I wonder why that may be the case for a player like Ohtani…

Basically this, Ohtani wouldn’t be getting $700 million if it wasn’t deferred.

Well there is insurance, and he is in a few tv commercials here in the states, he is a God on Japan.
He is extremely wealthy he will not be living on skid row in-between games.

With inflation, that $680m is not going to be worth that 10 years from now….it’ll be worth less. This is an idiotic financial move on his part no matter how you slice it
Jesus this thread is full of dumb dumbs.
Yall are acting like Ohtani just passed up 10 years at $70MM per right out of the gate. The Dodgers never would have offered that. The reason the total contract was $700MM was precisely because of the deferral option. If he wanted it now it would have been much less overall money.
Inflation is worked into the total contract. Do you think his agents and financial advisors forgot about that?

Gavin Newsome is likely sacrificing children right now

And again, they're missing the forrest for the trees in ignoring the fast one the Dodgers have pulled here to have more money free now, and the fact that Ohtani unlike the typical pro athlete today ... that's the thing that's flying over people's heads, they're so used to mercenaries ... has bought into it because he wants to play in October. I actually admire him as a person even more.

I’m sure it’ll get flak but he only pays CA taxes on like 60% of his baseball income anyway since you pay it in the state where you earn it typically.
Also it’s a proverbial drop in the bucket in CA.

Oh, it has nothing to do with this. I just think Gavin Newsome likes to kill children

you move and start taking your 401(k), you pay the tax where the money was earned?
No, of course not. But I don't think the Ohtani deal is structured in a 401k.
Just saying, there are ways that California can claw back that tax money. They aren't letting that go.

What makes you think they didn't account for that by increasing the contract value in the first place?

Considering his contract is worth $340 million more than second place all time.
Nah, all the GMs here think it's a bad contract

Once I learned that Ohtani cleared 40 million last season on endorsements alone it all made perfect sense. I suspect that that number will increase with a huge market team like the Dodgers. His fame is going to only increase now and the money is about to get stupid from everywhere.
The Dodgers can now keep big pieces around him. The guy is brilliant when you think about it.

If he is healthy and playing great for a franchise like the Dodgers, he will be in the upper upper upper echelon of highest amount of endorsements among professional athletes.
