re: How do you love democracy and hate populism simultaneously?

The primary issues that populism means no principles. No principles is a scary proposition and leads to irrational mob mentality from all sides. To put it another way we want people thinking about elections and politics and not feeling things about elections and politics. Logic over emotion. The individual over the mob

You going to get embarrassed in front of your little friends. I’m just telling you.

All I know is the current iteration of these terms is that Trump’s populists support is a threat to democracy which we do not have in the U.S.

No one (virtually) on this board has been saying that.
In terms of this board exactly. Most people who want to vote Republican but not Trump are just worried about Democrats winning because they don't think Trump can win. That's not an indictment of populism as it pertains to democracy and it's an idiosyncratic variable that Trump himself creates and only Trump

Calm down tough guy. You're starting to sound borderline retarded.

It’s not a secret why Trump appears to be leading in muh polls. Most of the GOP electorate is no more intelligent or informed than your average leftist. This is the danger of populism.

I’m really just fricking around with that, but as long as we’re giving each other advice, mine to you is be more calm and restrained in both verbiage and delivery. Oh and never let ‘em see you sweat…..when one becomes triggered and frustrated, they seeing you sweat.
I’ll take your remarks under consideration, even though I’m not quite sure if I should rely on the certitude of your criticism. What are your qualifications in the areas in which you’re criticizing my product? Any answer is a good answer. No answer is a bad answer.

It depends on the political movement that populism represents. Populism that led to Brexit in England was good in my estimation. Populism that leads to fairer trade, less wars and secure borders is good too.

Democracy is not without its faults but it is the best system. Populism can be a problem in a democracy if the populism includes giving usual power and treatment of individual personalities.
It was populism after all that gave us the horrible expansion of government during the New Deal and gave us prohibition.

That’s the argument in a nutshell from the TDS infected. It makes no sense.
With populism you are just trading "power of the elites" for the "power of the mob".
If you are conservative, you don't want either one.

The “mob” being citizens. So what “power” of the citizens are you referencing? What “power” of the citizens does populism actually contemplate? And it’s not uprising or physical overthrow of the government. That’s not a natural or default or expected aspect of populism, not in the context of populism that’s subject of this discussion.
So what “power” of the mob-citizens is there to be concerned with or skeptical of?

Look up “the French Revolution.”

It’s a shame that there aren’t any people left who had to live under Huey Long.
He loved himself some authoritarianism to go alongside the grift.

In theory a mob could restrict the freedoms of others.
Not everyone wants all the freedoms that you may enjoy.

The way we’re doing it populism is causing chaos that will inevitably result in tyranny.

The groupthink and crowd psychology that comes from it. Theyre easily manipulated by Demagogues.

Well, if and when “the mob” inappropriately restricts the freedom of others, that’s what societal rules and regulations and laws are for, to address any such issues. Of course we expect those rules and regulations and laws to be applied legally, constitutionally and equally - but that’s another discussion altogether.
Basically what I was referring to in my post was representation of the “little man” in the highest levels of government, voting and elections and such. That’s the “mob rule” I’m referring to.

No it isn't.
Conservatives may not populism (I don't), but conservatives also don't run around whining about threats to our "democracy."
Liberals do, and liberals don't mind populism one bit. They've been arguing for populism for decades now.
They just like THEIR brands of populism. If they are claiming to be against populism, they're full of it and someone needs to call them on it.
