That would allow schools to directly pay athletes… (reporting per ESPN / NCAA president is named Charlie Baker — easy to research).

This is bigger than anything being talked about in sports, flying under the radar… would be the nail in CFB coffin & almost certainly buries LSU in short order.

You think LSU can't afford to pay like other places?!

This would help LSU if we could use TAF funds, but I don’t like this for CFB

If the athletes are getting paid, the school should be involved. It’s easier to regulate and the revenue streams are now tied to the expenses

That would make them employees, yes?

Kind of throws out the "student athlete" moniker. Are they state employees? TAF employees? Independent contractors? Is going to class a condition of employment?

I think the implosion of Texas A&M as well as the lack of success you've seen at Miami show that just because you have a ton of money doesn't mean you automatically go to the front of the line with regards to success.

TAF bought us a useless stadium deck upgrade. They can certainly pay for top talent.

There have been 50 "final nail in the CFB coffins."

LSU has the 6th most profitable athletic department in the country. 3rd in the SEC behind only Texas and Alabama.

If anything, this would help LSU. It would allow that TAF money to go directly to players instead of having to be rerouted through bullshite marketing deals.

While I'm totally against it, the scenario being proposed would entail some kind of revenue-sharing, so the field would actually be more level among the schools that opt-in to this system.

There's a lot about Baker's proposal that has not been fleshed out. The article says the proposal would demand that schools make equal NIL investments in mens and womens sports. Still too early to tell if something like this would have any legs.

If it buries LSU then it would be burying 95% of the rest of college football. He wants to create a super league that would have its own rules.

With the portal, this is all just completely unrestricted free agency,

Immediately turns to wife. “Honey. Time to start putting away more money for the doubled TAF donation.”

They should put a cap on it by sport/position.

This sounds like a disaster for college football.

I'm in favor of paying athletes but there needs to be a cap on earnings so that the schools with the most money aren't hoarding all the players.

They can’t stop players from getting NIL money on their own so I don’t see how this changes anything.

The transfer regulations are where the NCAA should be focusing. It seems like that would be an area where they really do have control and it would make a big difference.

Just end the farce that is college athletics. This has gotten absurd and many of these kids have no business at a university. Go pro and force the NFL to make its own minor league. All these “great teachers” called overpaid college coaches can go coach there instead of making a mockery of college athletics.
