I'm right handed, but left eye dominant (mid 40s). I shoot right handed guns.
Shotgun I can over compensate and keep both eyes open.
Rifle I have to shoot left handed.
If all your guns are already left handed, I would train him the correct way and shoot left handed.

For rifles and shotguns as a young man I did well with lever actions, pump actions and automatics. Shooting them as a lefty. You can’t train them to use the right eye; don’t even try.
Sure you can, because that's how I shoot. For handguns/quick reaction shots it's not worth trying, but shooting static I've never had a problem using my non-dominant right eye.
For handguns I shoot righthanded/left eye.

My exact deal. Learned to shoot left handed at an early age. Shoot rifles and shotguns left, pistols use right hand, but center up and use left eye.

I work in the eye field..."Switching dominance" is not recommended or feasible.
If I were you, teach him now to shoot with LH. Now with pistols, both eyes open and right hand should work.

My son started 4H shooting sports a couple weeks ago and they did the eye dominant test…at 38 years old I found out I’m right handed, left eye dominant.
I may take some time practicing left handed this spring and see if my shot improves. It’s never been good.
If I were you I’d start him left handed.

Casual experience here, fwiw ... my Son is left handed, left footed (that's important when evaluating) but, he's right eye dominant.
I started him shooting at the age of 4. By 6 he was winning his age class and above. By 18 he was competing nationally.
He's older now, about to marry but .... I raised him to shoot right handed rifle for two reasons.
1 - he is right eye dominant.
2 - he has more rifle options as a right handed rifle shooter.
When he was shooting 3-gun, he still shot pistol left handed.
Nothing more frustrating, as an instructor, than having crossover students (opposite dominant eye and hand) come through my class trying to shoot right handed while left eye dominant .... especially when it is a woman. They cannot grasp both eyes open sight acquisition.
I mention this because it matters a lot more with pistol than rifle so ... why not train them early.

I am same way… rifle shoot what’s natural… eye doesn’t matter. Shotgun- open both eyes… pistol- shoot hand of dominant eye.

I am cross-dominant. And lots of people are. What to do depends upon how cross-dominant you are. In my case, I have always either squinted or closed my left eye. Works fine. Both eyes open doesn't work for me. In the worst cases, some have to shoot lefty as a last resort. I would not go straight to that option. Experiment with other less drastic alternatives first.

I'm that way and the funny thing is I struggle with left handed rifles. I'm so used to working a right handed bolt, trying to use a left handed one is foreign. The only thing I suffer with is wing passing shots left to right. I'm damn good right to left though.

I'm the exact same. I shoot lefty with a rifle, and it's 100% more natural feeling for me. Idk how bad his eyes are compared to mine, but I still shoot righty with pistol.
A left hand/rifle stance is far more natural for me.

My daughter is the same way. She shoots a rifle left handed and is a good shot. Crazy thing is, she shoots her compound bow right handed and is a good shot with that.

I couldn’t close my left eye until I was about 17. I would tilt my head over the sights and close my right eye. I asked my dad about it a few years ago and he said “You would hit what you shot at, so I left it alone. It worked for you. I figured you’d eventually figure it out.” It did work for me. He didn’t discourage me from shooting ‘the wrong way’ and I fell in love with it. I shoot competitively now and it is an important part of my life. Im not sure what would have happened if he didn’t do what he did.

My son is same way. We put a patch on him while shooting bb gun for a while and he learned to close left eye well enough he shoots right handed fine now.
This what Ben McDonald does with his bow- patches the dominant eye so he can shoot with opposite side.

I damaged my right eye as a child and had to switch to shooting lefty (around 9/10yo). I now shoot long guns lefty, pistols with right hand. It works fine. I honestly haven't encountered a ton of issues shooting right handed guns lefty - you learn to deal with the reverse action and brass flying in front of you.

My son has the exact same issue. I started him off shooting lefty at age 7. He's 14 and shoots left handed no problem. Everything else is right handed. I stated hi with a Savage Axis Compact/Youth in 7mm-08 reduced recoil.

Tried this with my son. Even bought him a lefty Xbolt youth in 7mm-08. He just couldn't switch over.
