Like if Kelly called plays at LSU, I'd rather Hankton or Sloan at OC (good, young position coaches who are great recruiters who you can keep happy with the title) instead of Denbrock, which is what this hire feels like.

It looks like he can recruit but this seems pretty brutal. I’ve liked Elko’s hires up to this one but it feels like we should do better than this

i'd trust elko on defensive staff hires. and godfrey seems optimistic on the hire, he usually shits on everything.

Bateman was a Broyles finalist by making schematic miracles happen at Army. He’ll have P2 talent and a complimentary offense for the first time

That’s the other side of it I guess, but we’ve been sold Elko is going to be more of a CEO (which Jimbo obviously refused to do) and let the DC do his thing. Which makes this concerning. I’d be interested to know what UF fans think about him recruiting wise because his track record at UNC looks very strong on that front at least.
I’d have rather taken a shot on a younger P5 coordinator than this I think, it’s pretty underwhelming

If you dig a little deeper into that 2018 Army team (where he was a Broyles award finalist), they had the 73rd best SOS and led the country in time of possession and rushing. It was also the best offense they've had since 1954 I think it's really easy to get some skewed defensive numbers with those factors.

I’m not placing much weight on what he did at Army at all. It’s so drastically different to what he will be working with and who he will be facing in the SEC. Maybe that’s ignorant of me but the UNC experience is much applicable. Klein’s offense should be much easier on a defense from a ball control standpoint than what Longo runs but I remember those UNC defenses giving up chunk play after chunk play

I have no recollection of his UNC defenses, I'm looking strictly at the numbers. It could work out but it just didn't seem inspiring as I've explained in my posts above.

They never offered Robinson the DC position, he could have been the highest paid position coach in FBS but wanted to be a coordinator thus the move. Guess we'll see how things shake out in the next couple of years moving forward, I give props to Elko for not taking the easy route and giving Robinson the position, he clearly has a plan moving forward that didn't align with Robinson's vision.

If this is the staff Elko is building, I think in the scuttled Stoops hire would have been the better choice..
Outside of Klein, which I still feel is a weird fit more than anything else, I am just not seeing the level of coaching and recruiting talent I would have expected for A&M to be bringing in. Elko just doesn't seem to have the connections to build the dynamic level staff a team like A&M should be able to build.
In some ways this parallels to the bad hires Texas made with Herman and Strong and how bad those staffs were. There is no excuse with the resources Texas or A&M have to not have a staff full of guys that people either recognize the name as a solid long-term coach or a major up-and-comer.

Elko clearly values the familiarity with being on staff together previously at Richmond. Plus being a good recruiter helps.
Sounds like Elko is the architect of the defense and his plan is having an DC with an aligned vision and understanding of the concepts.

I disagree. You saw those type of hires under Jimbo, a lot of big name assistants that carried some weight on the recruiting trail, but the game had obviously passed them by.
Klein is a young up and comer, and the OL coach produced top 3 ACC units at Duke with a large talent disadvantage.
Trooper Taylor and the WR (assuming) will be the big recruiters on O.
The defensive staff is filled with guys who all have good recruiting chops. I think the jury is still out on Bateman as a play caller, but he is known as a great recruiter. Spencer and Ish are also good recruiters.
Regardless, the coaching staff Elko has hired will be a massive upgrade over what A&M has had the last 2 seasons. Jimbo's initial hires were pretty good, but every time he had to replace a coach that moved on it was a massive failure.

I honestly don’t understand trooper Taylor. Dude is a bag man. You don’t need that today.

Hard to notice with the sausage boys doing their moves & chants

Hey Steve, dont call on the sausage unless you want the full length.

Looks like we're hiring Wesley McGriff from Auburn as a DL coach. All that remains is WRs coach.
Posted on 12/31/23 at 1:02 pm to AllDayEveryDay
McGriff is going to coach safeties or corners
