Looks interesting.

I think it's delicious but I have definitely blacked out and done some stupid shite while drinking it.

I've actually had the imported stuff distilled in wormwood, used the spoons etc. It's a mildly interesting drunk.
The last time I had it, you couldn't get authentic absinthe here. Maybe you can now.

Absinthe - experiences
I've had two or three one night. Not sure if I got the full experience, but it was different.
By different, it's like the difference between drinking champagne, wine, or liquor. I remember being warm and happy, but it wasn't worth the licorice flavor.

If you don't get some with wormwood you didn't trip

The absinthe you can buy in the US is thujone free so it doesn't have the psychotropic effect.

I drank some in Turkey one time, and bought a tiny piece of rug that I wish I wouldn't.

I had some green shite at the Spotted Cat on Frenchmen 20 years ago. I’m sure it didn’t have anything special in it, but it was a different feeling buzz

I saw the Green Fairy and ended up sucking my own dick in the French quarter.
Thx for reminding me.

had the actual stuff 20+ years ago while in Crete...I remember hearing colors and the only surviving picture of that night is one where my friend is smoking a cigarette via his nostril

Tastes like a tub of piss somebody farted in. I had some at the Intercontinental in Montreal. They have an Absinthe bar in the hotel. I told the bartender to make me something else.

i find absinthe a fascinating drink.
In truth its just another type of booze. It has such a history behind it though. The reported hallucinogenic affects affects of absinthe come from a lot of things. The actual amount of thujone in most normally distilled absinthes is pretty minimal and would not really have those affects on humans (old distilled and new). Some shady distillers in the early 1900's did add extra amounts, but they also added a lot of things, included lead and other toxins which may have had a lot to do with the "absinthe madness". The truth is that it's alcohol content can go up to 75%, and with it being pretty easy to drink (if you can tolerate licorice) people would get truly shite faced on it fast.
So why was it banned if not really that bad? Well it was a pretty cheap drink to make, and in France wine is king. Absinthe was becoming very very popular quickly. Many of the wine producers ran slanderous campaigns against absinthe as it was cutting heavily into their profits. Throw in an increasing temperance movement i the early 1900's and it was a perfect storm to get it banned.
its a very neat experience to do it properly with the whole ice water and slotted spoon set up. Give it a go, but dont expect to have a fear and loathing in las vegas type of experience

Tastes great in a Sazerac. Have to be a fan of licorice / star anise. I'd take a Sazerac over an old fashioned any day.

Many moons ago, a group of friends went to Nola and happened to find/buy a bottle. This was prob around 2010. Get back to hotel on Bourbon and drink a few shots pf Absinthe mixed with some beer/other drinks. Next you know, a buddy is blank staring at the ceiling for like 15-20 mins, no emotion. Then, he beings to count 1-2-3-4-5 and says "their flying above us." We kinda freak out, but continue drinking on the balcony. Then boom, mfer is out on Bourbon street dancing. Then we watch as he hits up a pizza shop and comes back with a whole pizza like nothing happened. Good times!

I'd freak out too. Bad grammar gives me the willies.
Your buddy was just really drunk and/or had consumed another drug other than alcohol. Whatever it was, it wasn't from the Absinthe unless you got some adulterated bottle.

I had gotten hold of a bottle and opened it up one night at the house with our neighbors. I had already had a few beers that day just taking it easy on a saturday cutting grass and relaxing. Had a few shots that night while drinking beer as well. It takes a lot to get me good and drunk, and if i'm just sipping beers all night i'm not going to be dumb drunk by any means.
I don't remember most of that night, and i just remember feeling weird. I do remember being a bit amped up for a while, then i just crashed into a more somber demeanor, from what i've been told. my wife and neighbors all said they'd never seen me act the way i did that night, although they did say it was hilarious.
I"m not drinking that shite again, i know that.
