This has to be one of the worst years for Louisiana teams. Northwestern cancelled a season. Tech and ULM are terrible. ULL needs to win Saturday to be bowl eligible.

Will Wade will coach the football team too. He's pretty experienced in huge, quick turnarounds.

Nicholls had a pretty solid year though.

4 different head coaches in 5 years. 3 years with no press box. No lights. No money.
Epitome of top quality continuity and facilities.
McNeese days of what they were able to accomplish from the 70s to the early 00s are over. There’s just not enough money in the program to keep up with the Jones’s. It’s hard to see programs like App St,, Marshall, JMU etc etc able to mold into what’s needed when these were teams that McNeese was able to go toe to toe with in recent history.
It’s a shame.

Gary Goff is getting what he deserves for running out on his alma mater in the middle of the night.

It’s a dame shame
From 90-2010 or so they were one of the blue bloods of FCS. Stadium experience was unreal. Top 5 nationally in attendance and great tailgating
They don’t have the money and what else killed them is when other schools brought back football like Lamar and Southeastern. Two more schools to compete with and McNeese owned the East TX area.
It’s really sad and I don’t think they can buy Goff out

Yep grew up going to those games. Sucks that it’s become what it’s become

Yeah I went to quite a few McNeese games growing up. The old McNeese - USL games were fun as hell.
I would like to see them have national success at their level again.

I don’t see things getting any better for McNeese anytime soon.

Agree. As the popularity of college football exploded, even non P5 schools like ULL and La Tech have been able to invest in and improve their facilities. McNeese could win a recruiting battle with those schools in the 90s. Not happening now. Larger budgets have enabled more schools from outside of the bordering states to recruit the state. Arizona State and Texas Tech both signed 3 Top 60 players from LA last year. That pushes smaller, in state schools even farther down in the pecking order. Those 80s/90s/00s were sprinkled with P5 transfers that got buried on their depth chart and didn’t want to sit out a year. Grad transfer rule and now transfer portal killed that route for talent. McNeese had fallen way behind in facilities and Hurricane Laura made a bad situation worse. Don’t know much about Goff, but the job is much tougher now.

Goff played WR at Valdosta State under Hal Mumme. After bouncing around (as they all do) for a while as an assistant, he got the HC gig at Tiffin, a D-II school in Ohio. They were cellar dwellers, but he built them up enough to have winning seasons in his final three of eight years.
Then he took over a Valdosta State team that had just gone undefeated and won a national championship. He went undefeated in the regular season but lost in the playoffs. Then there was the Covid year with no season for the conference.
In 2021, he got VSU to the national championship game, but VSU was completely dismantled.
That night, he texted the AD and asked to meet him in the hotel lobby where he resigned and then hopped a plane for Lake Charles.
It's perfectly understandable for a coach to parlay success into a bigger gig, but his running out in the middle of the night like that caused some really hard feelings, and he is not well thought of in Valdosta.

He only had six seniors this year. I would think they are going to have to make major strides next year or you will be correct.

Not sure if that’s the perfect destination for him as I see him moving onto a bigger school as an OC instead of trying to get McNeese back to where they were. I think a bigger, power school looks at him as an OC

Yeah it’s a shame I grew up going to games in the early mid 90s in their heyday. As someone mentioned earlier Southeastern and Lamar bringing back football killed them because they made a living recruiting SE Texas and the Northshore area. There isn’t enough talent in the LC area to compete.
The lack of facilities I think is due to them being able to coast on reputation for so long and not having to invest. It’s catching up big time now post Laura.
It sounds like there will again be significant roster turnover, hopefully for their sake Goff can turn it around but if not he will be gone next year. Just not sure who would do better at this point.

They just don't have money and a few of the donors with money have died recently.
They were only paying Viator slightly more than $100k. I know a guy who was a GA for them who probably makes almost that much as a HS coordinator in TX.

If I remember correctly, the McNeese AD was in talks with a different HC but he wanted more money than originally offered (I believe for the coaching staff). AD goes back to get more money and (I think) got more than what he thought he would get. He ends up going and getting Gary Goff.
As someone who has half the details and is filling in the rest, it would seem like the AD can't let Goff go because he has a lot invested in him and it wouldn't be good to let him go quick.

His buyout is 600 K, which to McNeese, they don’t have
