On Twitter PFF states Swinson was the highest graded player on defense and Wingo replied with “1 more?”. Both have eligibility left, would be huge.

He needs to come back. Pretty sure he will be injured during the combine. M. Smith needs to return as well. The only players that should leave early are Nabers, and Brian Thomas. If I was Kelly I would also advise Brian Thomas to wait 1 more year and declare in a much less stacked WR class. Brian Thomas is not even listed as a top 12 WR by some draft guys. I do think that’s absurd however.

Biggest DL recruit this year is Wingo, then Smith. If we can get those two and Swinson to stay another year, then our defense can become much better with new blood at the helm that knows what they are doing. We need to hold on to Perkins too. With Whit Weeks and the 3-4 stud linebackers we recruited, especially Adkins, look out.

We need to go to 4 DL and 3 LB as follows for next year:

Womack Wingo Smith Swinson

Perkins Whit Weeks X. Atkins

Z. Alexander JK Johnson

D. Mcbryde Ryan

DE- Womack - Shand - CJ Jackson (True Fresh.)
DT- Wingo - S. Jones (Too slow for DE) - F. West - T. Hill
DT- Smith - J. Guillory - J. Lee - Langston - D. Johnson
DE- Swinson - Wiggins - D. Carpenter - A. Breaux

Add Reliford, Shone Washington and just 2 transfers and we would have 20 players on the DL.

OLB- Perkins Jr. - D. Keys - K. Cobbins
ILB- Whit Weeks - Penn III, West Weeks
OLB- X. Atkins - J. Howard - Brathwaite

CB- Z. Alexander - Stamps - J. Hughes - PJ Woodland
CB- JK Johnson - Welch - Ju'Juan Johnson - B Causy - Wallace Foster
SS- Ryan - Toviano - T. Singleton - Longlois - K. Jackson
WS- D. Mcbryde - Burns - J. Allen - Joel Rogers

I hate to lose Kai Bates and Ondre Evans as they could have been in the 2 deep and made our depth just right with 11 CB. However, we do have depth as it is with 9 CB and 9 Safeties. We should add 2 CB and 1 Safety from the portal then we will be fine, and easily make up for losing Duce and Harris. Burns is a liability at safety and he goes to 2nd string. I think Mcbryde comes in and wins the starting job and put Ryan back where he is better at safety. Toviano did OK at CB last game but he needs to play safety.

We need 2 more stud DL from high school ranks and Reliford and McKinley would do just fine, and one more edge rusher from high school. Then, get 2 portal (DT and Edge) and 1 JC DT like Shone Washington, then we will have a complete defense, have them work out to get stronger, and we have enough solid pieces to do some damage. But, we need a new Def. Coordinator who can teach our guys and line them up correctly. I'm tired of seeing 3 DL rushing and they are off the LOS 2 yards, then look at our CB lined up 12-15 yards off the ball when it is 3rd and 7 . But, we seem to not be able to stop 3rd and 8-15 yards, as they convert it almost all the time.

The 2024 linebacker class with Perkins, Weeks and Penn coming back should be fire, with a lot of speed.

Brian Thomas will be a 2nd round pick at worse, the combine could possibly get him into the 1st round. He is not coming back, might as well accept that now.

I’m not sure that my head can take watching another season of Smith getting manhandled by every team we face

I'd be shocked if he comes back. Hopefully Sampson can develop into a similar role.

People (not just LSU fans) do this all the damn time. Y’all stack name after name, ‘we got _____, _____, ______, and ______… man we are gonna be stacked!!!’

Then come to find out we don’t have a DC or OC worth a shite, then by week 3 everybody sucks and we need fresh blood..

So be careful. If the playcalling/scheming sucks, so will the players

Hard to say that now when we’re not sure who our DC will be and what personnel we’ll have leaving/coming in from the portal/retaining.

Speaking of retaining, I do agree that the biggest DL recruit this year will be Wingo. And as crazy as it sounds since he’s already got so much good film already, I think he’s more likely to come back than Smith. Specifically because of the injuries. Wingo is a dog and managed to still play well despite being hurt most of the year. And we also forget that he had shoulder surgery in the off-season which likely kept him out of the weight room a good bit of the off-season. And we know he’s a beast in there because he won whatever the big workout warrior award is last offseason. So he probably came into this season not quite as strong as he was in ‘22 and then battled a (groin?) injury most of the year. If he gets right and is able to go into next year 100%, he could have a 1st team AA type season and rocket up the draft board.

As far as Smith goes, he had some good tape his freshman year before he got hurt, and then mostly bad tape this year. But for him, it’s a risk/reward situation. Being as big of a freak as he is—and NFL teams knowing he was not only coming off a major knee injury this year, but had no position coach—I think somebody’s gonna fall in love with his traits and give him the benefit of the doubt and take him in the 2nd or 3rd round and think they can coach him into his potential.

Sure, it’s not the top 10ish pick he was projected to go before the season, and he could potentially come back next year and work his way back into the 1st round. But what are the odds of that? What if he has s similar year to this year? Or even worse, what if he gets hurt again? For a guy who missed half his FR year and all of his SO year due to injury, if he can put together a full season this year, underwhelming as it may have been, he may want to go ahead and leave. Obviously, I’d love him to come back, dominate, and be a top 10 pick in the ‘25 draft. But that’s not guaranteed, and is it worth the risk?

People are down on our defense this year, but if we can get some key guys to return, next year could be a huge improvement. Maason needs to come back and work his arse off in the offseason.

The future is bright.

Here is a screenshot. Note Swinson's reply, seems likely he is returning.

Two guys I would love back on the defense.

That would be a huge boost if Thomas came back.

It’s a loaded WR class this year. Get him and NIl deal and let him come back. He’d probably be atop 2-3 WR next year.

All that said, I expect him to go this year.

He has not been good this year but I don’t think most here understand how hard it is for a guy that size to come back from a major knee injury.

He’s a guy that (if he is all in and really dedicated) could return and improve his draft stock more than just about anyone in the country.

Mekhi Wingo has already played a lot of snaps of college football but doesn't have the best frame for the NFL. I could see him coming back, but I would understand if he's ready to move on.

This is the 3rd time I have seen this comment. When BK announced he was out for the season he immediately corrected himself say “well, 6 wks anyway” and Wingo himself said he could be back for post season. He may opt not to play but damn that dont put him out for the Combine…

They should all come back and try and right the ship on defense. A offense half as good as we have this year and a great defense probably has us undefeated or only 1 loss this year

Unfortunately it doesn't seem like he is going to. But he should 100% come back.
