Mummy (2017), Tom Cruise and the canceled Dark Universe

Just watched the Mummy for the first time.
Actually thought it was pretty good. Tom Cruise's character was off (couldn't find the right Rogue/I'm not a good guy but I'm charming balance) and it was missing something from that stand point, but that just took it down a notch. But overall it was a fun action/horror movie with some comedic lines.
Also set up some potential cool things to explore, like Russel Crowe's Jekyl/Hyde, vampire skulls. It did not do well domestically (80m?), but did ok overseas.
I remember hearing not great things right when it came out, and the timing of it coming out was bad. I didn't see anything particularly bad in the movie. Decent Popcorn fare for anyone that would turn their nose up at it otherwise.
Disappointed we won't get to see the Dark Universe and what could have been. Some of the name rumored/attached would have really brought some stars together. Anyone else enjoy it?

It’s been a while but I recall enjoying it

I thought it was a solid effort. The biggest issue, I think, was that people thought it was a remake of the Fraser Mummy movies or some type of tie with it and it wasn't. Plus people hate Tom Cruise and love to shite on him like Nickleback.

I enjoyed it. I was hopeful the universe would continue.
As for being rewatchable, every time I rewatch it, it further convinces me that Annabelle Wallis is one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen.

My issue was it was originally billed that it was going to be scary and then they made it closer to BF mummy and got kinda stuck in the middle. Still wished we could have gotten more of the dark universe

I enjoyed the movie and was looking forward to the Dark Universe. They could've released the films around October and had something special.
Even worse, they had some great actors lined up for the titular roles.
Angelina Jolie: Bride of Frankenstein
Javier Bardiem: Frankenstein's Monster
Johnny Depp: The Invisible Man
Luke Evans: Dracula Untold 2
Supposedly they were going to reboot Van Helsing with Channing Tatum
I think they hastily canceled it, but I get why they did.

One of the all time highest grossing actors and has been doing it without slowing down for over 30 years.

You can think what you want to about Tom Cruise personally, but he makes good movies. There are few production companies that put out solid movies consistently like he does.
I think the Mummy was good (not great) but enjoyable. You could tell there were too many cooks in the kitchen, and what had started off as a horror movie turned into more of an action movie. I assume that was Universal and Cruise having different ideas and not being able to really come together.
But the movie was still good, and laid a solid foundation for the Dark Universe. I would have loved to have seen the Russell Crowe Jekyll and Hyde.

I like Tom Cruise movies. I have zero ill feelings towards him personally.
I didn't like The Mummy. It was a movie that never decided what it was supposed to be. It never felt funny, adventurous, scary or exciting for more than a few minutes here and there. It was just nothing. A very bland effort.

if they did 'em right I'd prefer this to the new superhero stuff

This right here. I love Cruise movies but The Mummy straight sucked. It got way too caught up into making everything an insane action sequence and the decision to make Cruise undead was flat stupid.

I enjoyed the movie overall, but the mummy was a run of the mill action movie rather than horror, which is what universal should've been aiming for with this failed reboot.

I thought it was solid and would have continued to watch the connected movies.

Universal has no idea what to do with their ICONIC monster IP’s. They tried making them into Marvel movies. Total failure. Hey dumbasses (universal execs) here’s an idea - how about you make, idk, a scary Frankenstein movie? A scary Creature from the black lagoon? Hell take your litters pick of the talented young horror directors out there and give them a go. Who wouldn’t want to see Mike Flanagan or Robert Eggers direct a solid Universal Monster movie?

Agree. I felt like I was watching a Mission Impossible movie where the villain was an evil mummy. Shoehorning Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde into the plot the way they did it was a mistake IMO.
